I need a programmable rack reverb that is dead quiet. I have a TC Electronic M-350 and I'm sold on it's effects quality. But, it adds white noise (hiss)to the amp. The same when it's in bypass mode. I also have the older model M-300 which does the same thing.
Studio quality models?

When my brand new M350 died recently I sent it back for a refund and found an older Yamaha REV100 on CraigsList for a whopping $20 which as it turns out was a STEAL. Anyway, this thing is not only quite, but a thousand times better IMO. I see them on Ebay from $125 and up...

Dennis, I have two Yamaha SPX 90's that I believe to be dead quiet. These are extremely good sounding reverbs, programmable for any type reverb. If I wanted a rack mount studio quality reverb I would look no further than an SPX90. They are dirt cheap on eBay. (Not meaning to steer you to eBay from the Forum, just saying like it is.)

The white noise you are hearing is most likely a product of an impedance mis-match, I have had the same issue with the M-One reverb and D-Two delay from TC. Some Yamaha products (the REV7 for sure) have the same problem when used with guitar amps. My better Lexicon units are quiet but the cheaper ones are noisy, and I have not yet found a fix for it....

If you're using a line-level effect in front of the amp you're going to notice more hiss... if you can put the thing in a post-pre loop you'll find much less noise.

Great point Stephen.

Even a TC M300 or M350 should be very quiet if used at line level in the line-level loop section of an amp. Although, the M300/M350 isn't exactly the best quality dry signal path. Works great in parallel loops.

Lexicon MPX-1. I have one for sale $360 shipped conus. I guarantee if there is any noise when using this unit, its your routing and staging...not the unit. Best verb on the planet.

Lemme know if you want it.

Right now I'm using it through a Session 400 Limited. I've placed it in the post eq send/return and it's actually much noisier. I've patched it in the pre eq (volume pedal send/return and it's not as bad. It's the most quiet if I place it between the volume pedal and amp, but still white noise and tolerable for live playing. I haven't tried it between the guitar and volume pedal. The only effect I've ever used at that position is a compressor.
If it's the impedence mismatch, is there a reverb unit that has an adjustable impedence input?
I recently replaced my Truetone single coil with a Telonics humbucker and finally resolved the hum issue.
If I plug the guitar and volume pedal into the amp without any effects in line, you can't detect that the amp is even turned on. There's no hum or white noise with the volume pedal wide open.
So, I'm still in pursuit.
I'm looking for a quiet reverb with predelay. I like the M350 hall reverb with predelay, but not the noise.

Brad posted a link for the Bricasti M7....... That's pretty much the holy grail of studio reverbs these days. We got ours quite a few years ago and it was $3,500! I'm pretty sure the price has gone up from then. I've never used it in a rack with my steel, but I'm sure it's crazy nice. You can get a Fractal Axe FX box for around $2K and it will be squeaky clean on all the effects. All the effects and amp models in it are incredible. I've been using one for years with in ear monitors and it's extremely clean.

Jeff,
I did some training at Ft Carson 1971. There is a steel player/guitar player that still lives there that used to pick me up and take me to his gigs. His name is George Ramsey. Don't know if he still plays? I think he's retired military. Very nice guy and good player. If you have down time, look him up.
Thanks for the info and input.

Dennis,

I haven't heard of George, but will ask around to see if he's still here. I only know one other guy here in town who plays steel. It would be nice to meet another one. Good luck searching for the clean sound. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to get a dead quiet sound when I wasn't playing. I finally got to the point where I couldn't even tell if I was powered on it was so quite. That's important when using in ears because every little imperfection seems magnified. Thanks again for telling me about George. Maybe I can find him.

There is no output control on it. I can turn the input full left and still get signal, but it starves the amp. The noise is still there in bypass mode. I have been using it this way for several years on stage, but need to lose the noise when recording. I'm going to try a few different units at Guitar Center.

Would a noise suppressor in line work to eliminate the noise? Question Question

I just got the MX-400 and the same thing. I tried patching it through the amp effects patches, before the volume pedal, between the volume pedal and amp. It also creates hiss in bypass mode. So, it goes back to GC.
My first concern is reverb.

That's pretty strange, Dennis. I used an MX400 a while back and never had that problem. So, when you eliminate the effects box and just go from the guitar-pedal-amp, there's no noise? Then adding any effects causes a hiss? Are you using the quarter inch inputs on the MX400 or the XLRs? It almost sounds like a gain structure issue to me. What's the output setting on the MX400 when you go into the utility section? Are you going guitar, volume pedal, left input on MX400, MX400 output to amp? it doesn't sound like a power source issue, but you might try plugging everything into a power conditioner if you haven't already. Some effects boxes don't like certain types of power strips. It seems unlikely that the effects boxes are the problem when the problem is the same regardless which box you use. Is it the same with pedals? I'm just trying to think my way through it without having it in front of me. Hopefully you'll figure it out.

My main concern was quiet reverb. I found dead quiet in the Hall Of Fame. Extra effects was an added option in a rack unit. I have three stomp boxes that I use when necessary (mxr envelope, digitech tube overdrive and digitech compressor) and patched through a bypass switch box when not in use.
So far, I have the HOF between volume pedal and amp with amp turned up and can't detect any added noise of any kind when I plug into and unplug from the amp input. I'll try it through the effects loop next.
I wish the predelay switch had a little more delay time, but it's there. I have to spend more time with the adjustments to see how close I can come to my prefered TC M350 delay settings.
