I just watched a program on Public television, like Pacific Heartbeat I think it was called. Hawaiian seniors, and a few younger players, playing music composed by the Hawaiian Royalty of about a century ago.
It was filmed inside of the Iolani Palace, which is a place every visitor to Hawaii should visit.
Notable steel guitar player was Doc Issac Akuna, playing his Rick Aiello frypan.
Surprising part was the older Hawaiian women playing slack key, which of course was around for some years before steel guitar came along. Seems to be all kind of folks we never heard of, in the tourist type steel guitar music world.
Jeff Au Hoy likely knows them all ! |

I'm wondering if it's part of a series. I saw a segment with several Hawaiian musicians as I stated in this topic.

Tonight, the same series is airing a program about Hula. This is very educational material about the culture. I'm really enjoying what I have seen so far. |

There are some sessions with the slack key guys too, and Jeff Ah Hoy is in the mix also, along with Greg Sardinha.
Some of the tunes played were written by Queen Liliuokalani, the last Queen of Hawaii, who wrote a few hundred songs. A song book with her music is available, with 250 songs she wrote. |
