Jeff Newman was, without question, the greatest steel guitar teacher who ever lived. His courses are the benchmark by which all others are measured.

Fran has updated all of the courses to modern CD & DVD media. Her catalog also includes a great selection of rhythm track CDs for jamming, featuring some of Nashville's finest musicians.

If you know that Jeff produced something you want and you don't see it on the website, send Fran an email. Chances are it's available but just isn't there on the site.

Had it not been for Jeff, I would have quit in frustration long ago. I had to pleasure to personally join he and Fran at their place in Tennessee on more than one occassion. The hospitality and experience was as good as the knowledge I left there with each time. I learned that Fran was as much part of the business as Jeff was, a great team, and that's what qualified her to carry on. Glad to see you on board here Fran. You're doing us a great service by carrying the business on. There is not a week that goes by that I don't spin one of those videos or DVD's over and learn something new every time.

While riding to work today I was reading notes I had taken of a week seminar with nine other guys with Jeff back in July 1984. What a foundation he established for us during that week...how chords fit together, how to easily find them, scales and how to use them, putting both to use in songs,etc. I even jotted down some of the jokes, but there were far too many to capture. His courses show the same intelligence. Sure miss the guy. steve t

Having taken his courses for years, and spending four or five sessions with him on he hill, I went back to the basic AB Up from the top course. Guess what? I found great licks I knew years ago, and had not used in years. Just like a kid with a new toy. And I am sure I am going to find out just as much on the next tapes (that I studied years ago). Boy, he left a lot of knowledge documented. Its just like starting all over, and loads of fun!!

I'm going to step out on a limb and say that any Nooby that doesn't try these instructions is "missing the boat". The way they are laid out is as if you had an instructor right in front of you in real time. The man could/can teach! Whoa!

I totally agree with your policy regarding Fran! Personally, I've purchased courses from her in the past. However, will you clarify the above statement so that we members don't make a mistake in the future. Does this apply to USED Newman courses? Even though you have a firm, established Forum policy, regarding a 20% return to the original publishers? And to my knowledge, Fran doesn't buy or sell any of Jeff's courses USED .

I'm afraid that Fran isn't seeing many checks from Forum members. I'm actually considering stopping the sale and trading of used courses on this forum. The 20% royalty idea isn't working, and requests in Wanted To Buy just encourage piracy behind the scenes.

I know it's legal to sell used courses, but I'm personally opposed to the practice and I don't see any solution short of an outright ban.

Thanks for your honest feedback regarding my question about USED Newman courses. And, I'm sorry to hear that you are considering stopping the "sale and trading" of All Used courses. Unfortunately,as you know, this will affect many members who, at times, can't afford paying full prices. (I wish there was a way around this problem as you explain it.) However, this is your site, and you have to make decisions relative to its operation, especially when something goes against your good conscience.

It's also affecting publishers, who have to compete with their own product. Think about that. Creators of steel guitar courses are all individual steel players. It hurts them financially when a course is resold just because someone doesn't want to pay what it's actually worth.

There's plenty of free instruction on the internet. There are lots of published courses that don't cost an arm and a leg. I don't think that anyone will suffer because they "can't afford paying full prices" for a course.

I bought some lessons some time back and they were not what I thought they were. I gave a lot for them and when they got here there are a lot of them by people that I did not no had courses. Sad thing is they were all copies and I honestly have never used them. They were in a note book. I have never said nothing till now. I think it is wrong to make a copy of someones material and then sell it because I was never told they were copies.

I started learning to play the steel in about 1985. When hearing of Jeff I called and over about a 3 year period, bought over $2,000. dollars worth of lessons, to include a one year to subscription to The Woodshed Workshop. I had everything he had put out. In 2003, I decided to give it up. I sold my steel (D-10, Sho-Bud ProIII Red Birdeye) Vegas 400 Amp, and all my lessons. I also had them from Emmons, Jernigan, of course Jeff. Now the way I'm reading this it's OK to sell the Sho-Bud, the Amp, but not the lessons. I think, under a free enterprise system, when you buy something it becomes your property to do with as you wish. All lesson have a copyright, which means your not to make copies of it and it's against the law, but you can sell it. I don't understand the problem, when you have used it and finished with, why would it be wrong to sell it to some young player starting out, who may not exactly have the money to pay full price for them. This is about music and I know that Jeff would never go along with this. I knew Jeff, and know Fran, and I have (again) $3,000.00) worth of Jeff's lessons, with a Nashville 112 amp, MSA S-10 XL Classic, OneStage Zum, Morrell 6, Morrell-8, Gibson D-8 Console, and lessons from almost anyone you could mention. As a 21year military man, there are countries in this world that do thing just like your saying. This is a Dictatorship, but we live in a Republic, being free to buy and sell as we please. Jeff was everything anyone said on this forum, but there are still a lot of young players who never heard of him. I guess I said enough. I think selling them should be allowed, but piracy NO and those people should be bar from the forum. We just need to let people know that Fran is still there. Another good one, was her son-in law Rick, had Stepping Stone, I bought many lessons from him, anything new I bought it. Nuff, said Just don't do it Bob, it's not fair or right.

One more thought. Give Fran a place in the Forum, where she can take orders, show products, and isn't charged for her business. Two months ago I just bought over $250.00 worth of lessons from her. I had the lessons, but they were getting torn and DVD's skipping. Just and idea.

Jim Reynolds, for what it is worth, I agree with you. I just ordered the A&B course last week. I can’t wait to get it. Here is an economics lesson. Rigging a market has unintended consequences that always turn out bad, despite any good intentions.

I could not agree with you more.
I, like many other steelers who offer our courses on the Forum spend many hours doing what we love.
It is enough that we offer our tabs and courses at just above the profit line, without someone steeling from us as well.
It is ashame that this goes on. Not only in the steel guitar world but in all types businesses.
To ban the resale of courses is what needs to be done.

If the Forum discontinued the sale of used courses it would leave Ebay as the main source for these . At least within the Forum the vendors,as well as the Forum, may get something.
