I have been watching some old Gene Autry movies, and there is a steel guitar playing on most of the songs. (It's an acoustic guitar sound, just major chords, no 6th tuning, and rather primitive slide work)
Doe's anyone know who played steel for Gene Autry in the early days (1940's?)

Frank Marvin and Gene Autry met and teamed up in 1928 before Gene became a movie star. Frank and his songwriter brother Johnny were a vaudville act. Frank and Johnny recorded extensively with Gene and appeared in his movies.

There was an earlier thread I started on this. Marvin is correct. However, Mr. Autry's earlier blues recordings started with Roy Smeck on steel with Marvin stepping in by, I think, 1929-1930. In interviews I did with Autry in the late 1980s, he also noted that another steel player he used was Perry Botkin Sr. In fact, Botkin's Gibson EH-150 is in the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. Without doubt, there were others as well.
