I was wondering what amp you guys use for 8 string steel and how much power (wattage)Do you like one speaker or two and what size speakers you like? Im considering buying another amp , I don't think ill be playing out anywhere so itll be used at home in my own recordings but I do like a lot of head room , only effects I use are reverb chorus and delay no distortion I like music clean . Hi Russell
I know a lot of guys like Peavey and Fender amps but I have been using a 60 watt Behringer amp. It has built in effects but I just use a little bit of delay and I love the sound. A lot of people run down Behringer products but this amp cost me less than $200 new and has heaps of volume. I also use the tube amp setting as well. I dont play professionally any more and this amp has what I want for home use and home studio recording.
Been awhile since we last spoke at the Steel Guitar Builder forum mate. Hope all is well with you.
Regards Billy

I use a Polytone Mini Brute II. I bought it new in 1986. I bought it to use on guitar gigs, and I've done many guitar gigs with it. I still use it for that purpose, but I now also play my 8-string lap steel through this amp, and I really like the sound. I know many people will say one should use a tube amp with a lap steel, but I like the sound of my lap steel played through my Polytone transistor amp.

I have several amps for different purposes.
All have reverb/effects.
I have a large Peavey 130W Stereo with 2 12"speakers for loud gigs with a band.
A 100W Fender with 15" that I leave at church to play on Sundays.
Several Mid-size amps for Senior center gigs (not a lot of volume needed)
And lastly I have 3 battery powered amps (Roland Microcube, Cube Street and VoxDA5)
The battery amps are great fun, and I use them outdoors busking or on a rolling cart at nursing homes.
I leave the microcube in my van to play on breaks at work, and its loud enough for small gigs so I always have a backup amp with me.

My favorite is my Gibson BR 9 from the 40's but its just a 15 watt so I can't use it for gig.
For bar gigs I have 2 Chucktronics amps, they are boutique tube amp, to me they sound a lot like vintage ampeg. I have a small 30 watt head with no reverb with 1x12 cab that is good for small bar and for bigger gigs I have a 50 watt combo with 1x12 and 1x10.

I think small tube amp is the best for anything, guitar, lap steel, pedal steel.... I hate Peavy amp and dont like 15inch speakers.

Agree with Tony. Though many folks dislike them for various reasons, I love the sound of my old Polytone MiniBrute II. I used it when gigging instead of my LTD 400 for all but the largest rooms (or outdoors), simply because it sounded so much better behind my D-10 push-pull. Also sounds awesome with a Bakelite Rick at low volume.

For a more modern amp just to play around the house and for recording, a Pro Junior/Blues Junior or smaller Roland Cube offer pretty good bang for the buck, IMHO.

Fender Excelsior - 15-inch speaker. 13w. Tube with solid state preamp I think. 2012 but looks old. Good value for the money.

I used a Peavey Delta Blues (30 watt w/15" speaker) for years, it's kinda the (very) poorman's Fender Pro. Now that I am 66 it's way too heavy so I use a light weight Acoustic G100 (100 watt w/ 12"). I play once a month in a larger venue and for that gig I add a 12" extension speaker to it. It always sound good!

Carr Rambler - switchable between 28 and 14W settings, 1x12" speaker; lots of clean headroom, very lush tone, great tube-driven reverb; the mids pot allows to give it a more tweed-ish or BF Fender-ish character. Oh, and for use with my Telecasters, the bias-vary tremolo is also awesome.

I'm using a Peavy Classic 30. It's a tube amp that comes close to a Twin Reverb sound, IMHO, and it is a heck of a lot lighter! I have the sound man mike it into the PA to get the gain I need. My Peavy Vegas 400, which I love for pedal steel and keyboards, sits in the music room connected to my Carter D10. When the Carter goes out with me on a gig, I use the Classic 30. - Jack

I've been playing a 6 string lap (as a console) into a Behringer Ultratone K1800FX keyboard amp. Sound pretty good, but the steel's pick up needs a little more power. And I plan to play my Marlen D-10 through it.
