Hi,

Next noob question... Sorry, I am not a country music fan.

But I have this record and I've always wondered -what-/-who- is playing the low 'slide' in the 1st verse? And what instrument it is. It almost sounds like a bass played with a slide.

Is that a pedal steel? It's an amazing sound... to me, mainly because the intonation is just -amazing-.

TIA,

---JC

It's the late guitarist Phil Baugh on a Peavey T-series standard guitar that had pedals attached and activated by cables from a floor unit.

Search for Phil or the song title for more information in the archives here. Amazing player, uniquely designed and built mechanism.

Phil played with Buddy Emmons a lot. Ernie Renn who managed the BE website put up this photo and info re: above.

Pedals 2-6 raised the note a whole tone, (1-E to F#, 2-B to C#, 3-G to A, 4-D to E and 5-A to B.)
Pedal 1 lowered the sixth string two and a half tones, (E to B.)</center>

That first lick of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" says it all..

Thanks. What a sound.

Even more impressive: I'm always amazed that people come up with these one-offs and -then- take the hundreds of hours to master the required technique.

I've experienced the snickers one puts up with whenever you try -anything- even slightly -different-. Takes guts to pull off.

I don't think there were very many of them produced, but this really wasn't a one-off. MSA modified several Peavey guitars with this mechanism 70's, 80's.

As I mentioned earlier, there has been some previous discussion on the forum about them and there are other posts with more detailed pics.

I lower the 10th string on the E9th a whole tone. I play that lick on the 8th and 10th strings with a chorus.

If you have never heard Phil Baugh play, there are some YouTube videos that are worth a look. He was an incredible+++ player.
