I feel we steel players are a pretty diverse group musically. I know my taste in music varies from Miles, Clapton, Carlton, Yo Yo Ma, and about everything in between.
What I'm curious about is, what little known gem has kept your attention and keeps you listening for months, even years? What is in your iPod that is in heavy rotation many of us may not know know about? There is so much obscure music out there that is great, that if we don't get a recommendation for it we'll never be exposed to it.
Try to give a link that will give samples. I don't believe that our age group will not buy music, only that we don't want what is being pushed on us.
This is a CD I've had for about 5 years and still listen to it often. I'm curious if any of you have heard it. The CD is "Twlight" by Laurie Wheeler. Yes there is steel guitar on one track, only that is not why I listen to it. (For the record, it is a great steel track by Paul Franklin) In my opinion, Laurie is the best jazz singer of our time, at least!

Randy,
I spend most of my time listening KALX, the U.C. Berkeley radio station. You can listen to it on the web at KALX.org. True, they can play a bit too much hip-hop and punk, for my taste, but yesterday's Sex for Teens broadcast featured a loving tribute to the late Richie Havens. Moreover, after hearing several tracks from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' new record Push The Sky Away I picked up a copy post haste - it is sublime.

I've been an internet DJ for seven years and have my own small station now (click my www link to see and/or listen). It keeps me listening for new music every week.
I like a pretty wide range of styles, from soul to country and classic rock, blues, and other things.
I'm 55 now, and I find that a lot of my friends have been listening to the same stuff for 40 years - I always tell them that there is so much good new music to be found, but you have to make the effort look for it, since it's not mainstream any more.
I listen a lot to the Loft on Sirius/XM, and to WFUV at Fordham University (wfuv.org)

| Not sure how little known they are, but Dick Curless' last album "Traveling Through", Whitey Morgan & the 78s self-titled album, and James Wilsey's "El Dorado" have all been in steady rotation in my car for at least the last year and a half. |

Randy Your series of CD's and sound tracks are as good to listen to as any thing out there. Some of your originals,I have to confess are above my head, but I still try to play them and it helps me to pick up some new ideas.
Hope you put out some more.I think I have every thing you have put out as far. Super quality on the production side also.
How about giving us a current up date on your career at the present time. |

Brahms, Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98, 1st Mvt., trying to analyze the interpretations of Ormandy, Jansons, Szell, Bernstein, Hengelbrock, Honeck, and Klieber. This is my favorite classical piece!
Of course, I really don't expect anyone here will appreciate it. But then again..you did ask.  |

Randy, for forty years I keep coming back to George Barnes Swing Quartet(1971) because of his energy and his Sidemen' s musicality! Also I been digging Blood,Sweat and Tears,Lucretia McEvil and the especially the solos on the God Bless the Child,great horn section! JS
