Question about tubes ?

I know tubes can make a big difference in tone and power Etc. I have some NOS tubes that have made some very nice difference in tone in my Rev. Pre Amp.

I have always wondered though,how exactly does a tube work, in a nut shell

Long plate,short plate,,? How do tubes make a difference in sound? What exactly do they do, how do they work ?

Im so confused
