Weldon is one reason I used to watch the Opry every Saturday night. What a great steel player he is.

What Paul said. If Weldon wasn't on, I was sore disappointed! Sad

My favorite Weldon GoP was his solo on Jimmie C Newman's Diggy Liggy. That was back in '73 '74.

Apart from the obvious "I'll Come Runnin,'" I always liked his work on Connie Smith's Cry, Cry, Cry.

I've just read the liner notes of an old record, and he was credited for the strings (arrangement?) on this one, amazing!

A steel played properly using overdrive can do some cool strings things..
What happened to the vocals on this? They're almost completely buried until about 2:30 into the song.. Confused

There's no question for me that there is a string ensemble playing before the point at 2:02, where I think that it's a mellotron coming in. This riddle will probably not be solved by us Barry Smile

many times on the opry and otherwise three steels (i.e. sonny, hal and weldon) would simulate string parts employing boss tone fuzz and each steel playing single note sustain in harmony with the others. of course, you all know that.

I had the pleasure of playing on the Opry stage several times with Dottie West and she always had Weldon,Hal and Sonny do the string section sound on several of her ballads. what a pleasure it was to be in the mix .I will always be thankful that i had that chance and got to be part of that. Sure miss Hal and Sonny and Dottie, super talented people. Rudy
