I have a Black Widow 1501-4DT (deep throat) speaker in my NV400. I understand that the Shallow Basket (SB) produces a more desirable sound for steel. Is it possible to recone my DT basket using a paper cone without the Kevlar, or use a basket and cone designed for the SB model?

Hi Jaye,

I don't think Peavey still produces the 1501-4 SB basket but you might be able to find a nice used one. The newer BW magnets (like your NV 400 has) is not compatable with the much older magnet design.

I'm currently using a 1501-4 DT (with a neo magnet) in my NV 400 and it actually sounds pretty good to me. I want to try a new Telonics neo speaker in it though, as I have a pair of them in my stereo rig and I'm very impressed with them. Another plus is that they are a lot lighter weight than even the peavey BW speaker (with the neo magnet).

Hi Lynn,

I've done a lot of searching on the Internet and I think that you are correct about the 1501 DT.

I am also thinking about getting a Telonics speaker when they are made available. Dave turns out great products, and so far, I've heard a lot of good reviews about that speaker.

Jaye

SB baskets will transfer to the DT series. Magnets are the same. Check with Mike Brown at Peavey for availability from them or their dealers. If Peavey doesn't offer the SB anymore, several online stores still show them in stock. You'd need to double check for availability of course.

Orange County Speaker @ http://www.speakerrepair.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=Peavey or www.loudspeakersplus.com or Antique Electronics @ www.tubesandmore.com

The main difference in the SB is that there is more emphasis on the low end.

Thanks for the input. I have a 1501-4DT with the paper cone, and it appears from doing a lot of reading that many folks prefer this particular model for steel guitar. I prefer to play with my bass cut somewhat, so keeping what I have would probably be my best bet. I'm entertaining the idea of having my Peavey guy do a Fox intense mod.
