Back in the late 70s/early 80s Mickey Andrews got a fair amount of air time here on Winnipeg radio stations. Thanks to CanCon (Canadian acts had to be spun a certain percentage of the air play). His tunes were relatively short (2:20-2:50) so fit in nice just before newstimes at the top of the hour. Since they were more or less instrumentals the stations were not nervous about cutting them off for the news though as a fan of the Dobro I found it irksome. Not sure what he played on the _Velvet Dobro_ album from 1975 but both sides of the cover have a 10 string Dobro pictured. Not sure if any of his stuff is currently available or if he is still active but I ripped two tunes so as to give people a taste of Mickey.

If anybody has a link or contact info as to current availability of his stuff (he recorded at least 4-5 albums) some might be interested in purchasing. |

Mickey was active in 2008, according to this video:

I recall that his band was originally named Cabbagetown, but was renamed Eastwind after the death of one of the key members.
I have, or had vinyl copies of some of his dobro records, as well as copies of Cabbagetown and Eastwind records.
He was really smooth on both dobro and pedal steel. |

A real fine player.
I saw Cabbagetown a couple of times in the early 80's in Toronto - they frequently played six nighters at the Orchard Park Tavern where I also was working a lot. I would have gone to see them more often, but everyone in Toronto with a steel guitar and a pulse was doing six nighters in those days, mostly in dumps of course. At that time Eastwind was the name of Johnny Burke's band - Al Brisco was playing steel for them.
Mickey played great the times I saw him - I remember him playing "Walk Don't Run" - if you closed your eyes you would not have known it was a pedal steel. My hazy recollection is that the version of Cabbagetown I saw was just s trio.
About 20 years ago, maybe even a little longer, I saw him at Massey Hall with Stomping Tom Connors, who was doing a comeback tour. Great show. |

The above is a link to Mickey's recording of "Beautiful Yesterdays" done around the late 60's?
Mickey was born in New Waterford, Cape Breton not too
far from my birthplace, Sydney Mines.
As far as I can establish he lives and still plays in Toronto area?
He played his Dobro differently by pushing the thumb pick forward a lot. Great expression and a nice player.
Note: there is about a 30 second silence before the clip starts. _________________ Custom Tabs Various Tunings
