Hi. I am a newbie, and wanted to say hi. In the process of educating myself, this forum has been invaluable, so I wanted to say thanks! I'm a long time guitar player who has always been fascinated by the steel. The buying process was a little daunting at first, but thanks to recommendations here I ended up with a Zumm Stage One. As best as I can tell, it is a really nice guitar for learning. After reading about some problems some folks had after buying some cheaper used one's, I feel thankful that I got one practically set up out of the case. Sure saved some head scratchin'!
I'd also like to thank Mark Van Allen. I'm lucky enough to live close enough to take lessons from him, and after my 2nd lesson, it's starting to make a little sense. (maybe I should emphasize "a little", but I'm working on it ) He takes a very practical approach, which has been great for me. His theory CD's have been a big help as well. Highly recommended.
One quick question: In the booklet that came with the guitar, it says "when changing strings, a wound .022 is highly recommended for string 6. It helps the overall sound and playability of the guitar". I noticed, however, that most steel string packs come with an unwound 6th string of lighter gauges. I assume that is just something particular to a stage one? Can somebody recommend strings without having to go the individual route?
