I am new and therefore confused.

I got a Rondo lapsteel and the string size don't make and sense if I look at the string chart....I am not sure how this works...

It has 35/42/69/90/1.15/1.40 on it

How does one convert those numbers to the size numbers on the chart?

Once I get an answer we can close this post

Thanks

These are the rough equivalents for your convenience.

0.35 mm = 0.13
0.42 mm = 0.16
0.69 mm = 0.27
0.90 mm = 0.35
1.15 mm = 0.45
1.40 mm = 0.55

What tuning will you be using?

Firrst ..is there a chart or formula? Is the 0.13 ect. inches ??? or ???

Well not sure what tuning those are... I need to look at the chart. I have never done anything other than dobro open G sometimes dropping the first string to B.

Like I said I am "very new" at this stuff. figure I will go with open G like my dobro until I figure out the my amp andplay a bit of what works with my dobro for a short time... then going to C6 so I have been told is good for country.. ? I like some of the old and some new, pretty sure I can figure it out, Troy B has sone great C6 lessons on line.
Thanks Brad

Well, a set of "standard" regular gauge electric guitar strings normally goes from approximately .013 to .056. Here's a set designed for open E tuning that will work just as well for open G tuning, although some people would prefer heavier strings on the first three strings. Another set i'd recommend is the Martin resophonic nickel wound strings.

Be aware that a set of standard resonator guitar strings probably won't work well on your electric lap steel. The bronze wound strings won't pick up as well as the unwound nickel strings.

For C6th tuning, I'd recommend this set of John Pearse strings or something similar.

1 inch = 25.4 mm, so the gauge in inches, given the gauge in mm, is

gauge_inches(inches) = gauge_mm(mm)/25.4(mm/inch), so rounded to the nearest .001",

0.35 mm = 0.35mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0138in or about .014"
0.42 mm = 0.42mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0165in or about .017"
0.69 mm = 0.69mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0271in or about .027"
0.90 mm = 0.90mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0354in or about .035"
1.15 mm = 1.15mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0453in or about .045"
1.40 mm = 1.40mm/25.4mm/in = 0.0551in or about .055"

You can do the conversion for any string gauge like this. Additional useful info on strings and string gauges here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strings_%28music%29

I also have got input for .015/.017/.022/.026/DY30/DY36 for the C6 tuning.(what is that "DY" )....a little different than the Pearse you mention above.. I noted it but can't remember from where? .. Did say it was a bit less Hawaian?
is there really that much difference?
Thanks for the input... GR8 feedback.

Not really. Try whichever set you buy and see if you like it. If not, try the other set.
