I had a write-up somewhere before moving of the gauges I had used for my Homeless Man's Stringmaster D8 (Bruno Conqueror, looks like a guyatone knock-off, which is a bit like a downmarket stringmaster...)

What I've had as to tunings to this point was:

E
B
G#
E
D
B
G#
E

and

G
E
C
A
G
E
C
A

I can't for the life of me figure out what the best way is to manage this from regular string sets, as I've unpacked it for a practice session this weekend and the strings are relatively shot... no idea what I bought last time around.

What is the quickest/dirtiest/easiest way to cobble this together based on regular guitar store stringsets??

A good music store will sell individual strings by gauge. That's how I buy strings for my non-pedal steel guitars. I've never purchased a set of strings for non-pedal steel in my life. I just go to my local music store and buy the individual strings I need. Actually, I've been teaching guitar and steel at the store for 33 years and I'm there four days a week, so it's easy for me. Cool

I was trying to find a cheaper way of accomplishing it, but just got all the single strings I needed. Thanks for the link to the gauge chart, I had something similar somewhere, long lost to time now.

Not the least expensive string change ever, but at least I can get it done.

Doug - I know this has been discussed here before, but what is your approach to string gauges for long scale (say 24 1/2") vs. short scale guitars?

Hi Ralph, most of my non-pedal steels are short scale, so I don't know the details of string gauges as they relate to long/short scale. My understanding is that longer scale guitars require lighter gauges. To be honest, I never paid much attention to it. I put the same gauges on all of my guitars (as per each tuning).

Hi Nicholas, I used the same tuning on a D8 and the best way I founded was to buy a C6 and a E7 string set + a single .012 for the G on juststrings.com

I agree with Doug - I've never bought strings form my steels and resonator guitars by the set. I know what gauge to use for a particular note, and I use that string whenever the tuning calls for that note. It's the result of a lot of trial and error over the years. - Jack

Here are recommended tools for a steel guitar player:
1.) Dyke cutters
2.) Needle-nose pliers
3.) Digital calipers or micrometer
4.) Electric string-winder
5.) Digital volt-ohm-meter

Note #3... you would know *exactly* what you bought last time, because you can mic' it and know. I bought a Kobalt digital caliper from Lowe's hardware... about $25, and has multiple uses beyond just telling string gauge. Use the flat, not the knife-edge, when mic'ing wound strings!

BTW, I've had good luck piecing together 8string sets by using normal 12string guitar sets... often the 12string sets are available in extra-light, light, medium, etc... you should be able to patch together whatever you need from these. Very useful for acoustic, you'll find most store's phosphor-bronze single-string selection limited at best.

This is for a solid body D8, so the phosphor bronze would probably be a bit ineffective... the 12-string suggestion is brilliant. I think I've got the rest of all of those things BUT for the micrometer, which I've yearned for for no good reason for a very, very long time.

Here's how I sell it to the wife Smile
