I' m the first steel guitarist EVER to......discover a new minor planet.

I guess my playing will never win me any firsts (except maybe the worst E9 solo ever)so I have to concentrate on my 'other hobby' as an astronomer for that

Very cool. Do you get to name it, too? If so, perhaps you could name it "The Big E", who also happens to share a passion for astronomy! Wouldn't that be dandy? |

Well yes I will get to name them in 2 or 3 years when the orbit is well calculated. The Big E would be my first choice but it would be registered as Thebige (with an attached citation that explains who its named after)
Other people Id like to honour would be Albertlee and Gordonhuntley. Ill just have to keep going out looking for these rocks after gigs (when the rest of the band are down the pub..)!
I had no idea Buddy Emmons was interested in astronomy....cool!

Matt, that's very cool!
I have a nice little Nexstar 4 - fits perfectly into the old saying "the best telescope is the one that gets used". It's convenient, quick to set up and align and small enough to store in an accessible spot. Lots of fun! |

Matt,
Congratulations! I've been interested in astronomy since I was a kid. About 10 years ago my interest peaked and I've been involved with local groups ever since. I can't say that I've ever had the level of commitment that you obviously have. I have a lot of respect for anyone who maintains such an endeavor as you have been involved with. I'm thrilled for you that you were rewarded with "the find". At my level, I just enjoy taking out the scopes and binoculars, learning and sharing under the sky when I can. Thanks for sharing this.

Matt........ That is "Far Out". The closest I ever came to Astrology was sitting up half the night after a gig listening to the Art Bell Show from Pahrump, Nevada. I was addicted to it and wish he were still on the air.

Me too!! I always take binocs on vacation, just because I take it as seriously as playiing steel doesnt mean I've lost the simple joy of just looking at the sky!
I probably devote less time and commitment to astronomy than most people on this forum devote to practicing and playing steel! I love both but there just isn't enough time.
Its about 100.000.000 miles away, between Mars & Jupiter. ...... its only about one mile wide so its a VERY minor planet.
Thanks for the encouragement.

Now wait a minute... are you saying that you've discovered something that's only a mile wide, that's located a hundred million miles away from us? Um... what are you using, the Palomar Observatory?? |

Way cool, Matt.
My ex-brother-in-law has a little observatory; here's his website http://www.astroimager.com/
with lots of cool pics including nebulae and other 'vermin of the skies.'
Keep lookin'.... |

Hi Jim.
I^m using a 20 inch mirror with a VERY sensitive CCD chip (cooled to -40 degrees)
These days the stuff amateurs can afford is comparable to what Moont Palomar had 30 years ago. The digital revolution has moved the goalposts in our favour! I built the telescope myself. The drive uses parts of a crap German ABM steel I once had
