Does anyone know what the "steel Mod" in these things actually was. I'm not looking for sound quality comments. I'd like to know exactly what was done to the circuit.
Can anyone illuminate me?? Or, even better, send me a schematic drawing of the mod?? _________________ Best regards,

I tried to get the info from Genz-Benz but they wouldn't provide anything. I had an old original Tubeworks preamp and wouldn't modify it. They said the only one they would modify was the model that they made as the other models varied in component placement and they "didn't have diagrams".
I sold the one I had as I couldn't put up with the hum due to the bass control located next to the power supply components (acknowledged problem by Genz-Benz) and that I got rid of a rack system.
But, I suspect input gain was the only mod. |

Do you remember the model number of that unit of yours, Jack? Mine is a 924. They sent me the schematics for it and I managed to repair it (no component layout diagram to help), but I saw some component values that didn't match the schematic. They were made with pretty cheap circuit boards and some questionable solder work.
I'd love to play around with some mods of my own, but that board won't take much resoldering without the traces falling apart. Such a shame. _________________ Best regards,

No, I don't remember the model number, just that it was original BK Butler built model. |

It's hard to beat the Blue Tube II for a pre-amp.
That is the unit I use in my rack. Mine doesn't have the steel mod but I did change the tube(s) to one with a lower gain. I believe it sweetened it up. |

I'll have to try that, Erv. I plan to try it with my TranstubeFex, set for effects only, in the effects loop. Or maybe just in series.
How do you have yours hooked up? _________________ Best regards,

My rack is almost entirely Tube Works stuff.
The Blue Tube II comes first then the signal goes in tandem to a Lexicon for delay, chorus and a bit of compression. Then to a Tube Works spring reverb unit and finally to a Tube Works amp. Then out to a pair of Peavey speaker enclosures with 15" Black Widows. I also installed a pair of tweeters in each of the speaker enclosures. |
