Hello everyone,
I'm a new lap steel player living in Austin studying under Bob Hoffnar. I just started to experiment with a volume pedal--awesome for slants. Anyway, I was going to employ a close friend to build a stand in order to avoid rocking the instrument and to pretend I'm Don Helms. My friend said average desk height would be 29 - 30.'' Does anyone have any suggestion for height range approximation for a lap steel stand?

stand with your arms out stretched in front of you; as if you were playing a lap steel standing up.
have someone measure that height.
I use a keyboard stand with a wooden spanner. the stand opens and locks into several positions. the position I like the best is where my arms are parallel to the floor and I am not hunching over.

Why build when you can buy. Like Randy says, and a keyboard stand is adjustible, light weight and rather inexpensive.
