just a heads up in case anyone is interested.. Its getting hard to get pickups rewound or repaired any more.. Most that did it in the past no longer rewind as it takes too much time from new builds...
I was turned on to Tom Brantley down in NC by a forumite. He does rewinds and repairs, and had worked many years for one of the best known and respected pickup rewinders.
Won't mention his name here, but its on Tom's website..

I told Tom what I wanted.. A custom wind on my Fender 800 Jaguar style pickup, which had gone open and sounded thin. tinny and weak.. I requested it be wound to 13 K, w/tap at 9.5 which is the factory wind..
Got the pickup back in a reasonable time, he was very fairly priced, and that pickup is GREAT.. It sounds like fine old gold!.. All the rich harmonics and "straty" overtones are back.. I mean it just sounds like an old Fender should sound.. Just delightful.
I now have two very usable sounds , one thicker with a bit more sustain and power, and one brighter and sweeter... More "Fendery"...

I highly recommend Tom if you want a rewind instead of a new unit.. He will be getting my Sho bud Pro I pickup soon for another custom wind.
Wound to about 17 k with taps at 11.5 and 8.5...
Should be a blast having a triple tap on a Bud!..
I just wanted everyone to know, there is still someone that will do rewinds and repairs on great old steel guitar pickups... bob

Bob, glad you were able to get your pickup rewound. If you would post a link to Tom's site, I am sure others would steer business his way.

You are right Don,,,,

I have had pickups rewound, and even had a few custom made by several different people over the decades..Each and every one came out GREAT.. No complaints, and this started back in the 70's when I had an MSA SS humbucker stripped and rewound so that I could isolate either coil.. It transformed an otherwise muddy sounding steel into a biting, whiny, glassy sounding steel that turned other steel players heads for a long time with its sound..

These guys are all very good at what they do...

Problem is, no one wants to do it anymore.. thats where Tom comes in.. I am really glad he continues to rewind and repair great old pickups.. My Fender 800 simply sounds magnificent now!.. I couldn't be happier with the work Tom did.

That's a heck of a price for top work.

correct.. A new pickup would cost me double, and the amount of work to install it would be a headache. The original is as narrow as a Fender guitar pickup, and I would have to route the body. Not only that, I wouldn't have a coil tap with an aftermarket replacement.
