I am new to the lap steel, I have a pretty good ear for finding a single string lead for songs, but have problems finding harmony notes that seem right. Any suggestions for developing this? Is learning songs from other folks tab a good way to learn? I know a little basic music theory, but it can get over my head pretty quick. I'm playing 6 string c6 tuning. |

Jim,
If you know theory a bit I would look into harmonized scales. Play the C major scale in 6ths. Melody note on the high C string and harmonize using the E string below. You will need to do a forward slant in positions except at fret open, 5, 7 and 12.
Then find the same scale (C major) with the high E string as the melody and the G string below as the harmony note. You will be using a backward slant except in positions except at fret open, 5, 7 and 12.
Write out a chart like the fret board with all the notes of the C major scale on each string so you can look at the neck like you would the white keys on a piano.
Tab can be a help but learning the neck will open things up in a much more comprehensive way.
Maybe somebody can help explain if this doesn't make sense. _________________ Bob |

Thanks Bob. It makes sense. I have the George Boards DVD's and this scale is on one of the dvd's as a matter of fact. I'll take another look at that and explore it some more. |
