A friend of mine has an old magnatone d-8. any recomended tunings? thought I might string it up & see what happens.

I'd probably start with C6 and E9, but it depends on what you want to play. Do a search for many other discussions and recommended tunings.

Brad is too modest to mention his own very excellent web page dedicated to non-pedal steel guitar tunings, so I will. It shows dozens of tunings and the famous players who used them. Here is the link:

In the last section at the bottom of the page is also a useful string gauge chart so you will know which strings to buy for a particular tuning.

I agree that C6 and either E9 or E13 would be a good classic combination for a D8.
