This evening I received an unexpected eMail from New Mexico with an MP-3 attached thereto.
The sender was Sharon K. Holmes-Kizziah, the daughter of the late Tommy Kizziah, a long time Salem-Portland, Oregon, country western band leader and recording artist on 4-Star Records. Tommy's West Coast Ramblers held down the fort at the extremely popular Division Street Corral located in southeast Portland, for a number of years and backed many of the touring Nashville artists. He was also well known throughout the Salem-Lebanon, OR., area. Tommy had played over numerous radio stations in this area, the last was the NBC affiliate, KGW in Portland.
Sharon discovered an old reel of professionally recorded music after the recent death of her mother.
Tommy had recorded about a dozen songs that were to go on 4-Star Records' next release package but this never came to fruit.
Having this opportunity to hear some of my playing from way back when I was 17-19 years of age has been most gratifying, to be sure.
Listening to my lil' olde FENDER triple-8 being played thro' that Fender Bassman 4x10's without benefit of any electronic gizmo's has revealed just how good that old equipment sounded. As musicians we seem always to be looking up the ladder to the newest and most expensive rigs on which to realize our musical dreams.
Just wanted to remind you that 'old' equipment is not always 'bad' stuff. Don't be too quick to trash the current machines on which you're playing. You have a real jewel but just haven't recognized it as yet. Once they're gone, they may not be recoverable. |
