Ok so if you had been watching the posts I started about Phil's Little Walter amps last week in the Electronics section I was very interrested in hearing from you all that attended the Dallas show This year
what you thought of this amplifier that is supposedly becoming the "Holy Grail" of sound reinforcement for Steel...Is it all that it's cracked up to be? What other amplifiers that showed up in Dallas if any would you consider on an equal or at least in the ball park with the Little Walters sound? |

I attend the Saturday and was able to here a nice amp. The way he explained this in a easy and understandable way was impressive. I was able to here a gentleman playing with the amp. You can only decided what sounds good to you. I have electronics training as well as experience changing AM and FM transmitter tubes. I have also change HV hardening tube. If you are wanting a really nice tube sound with a good transparent sound this might be good for you. This is a investment in your gear so only your ears and your wallet should ever make the final judgement. IMHO wallet I am going to have to pass but if money was no option I would have taken one home. _________________ ShowPro SD10, Mullens RP, Bose S1 Pro, GK MB200, MB500, Bugera T50 Tube amp with SlidgeRig, TC HOF reverb effect. |

I spent a good amount of time with Phil in the LW room, but mostly played guitar through his amps (Phil's '53 Tele). I am most certain that you and I have different tastes in sound, but I can tell you that I thought the Little Walter amps sounded great from my perspective. They were able to handle some of the complex voicings I played with a great deal of clarity and chime, which is an element often missing from solid state amps (I do like solid state amps, as well). I also really like the dynamic response, as I am a very rhythmic player.
As far as my favorite amp for steel in Dallas, I sat down with my Clinesmith steel (a lap steel made like an old Bigsby) and played through a Sarno V8 Octal preamp into a delay, then into a Furlong Split. The sound was simply stunning--deep, rich tone with just the right amount of sheen for me. That was hands-down my favorite of all that I played through in Dallas. A lot of folks stopped in their tracks to hear it. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Mike sounds like you just made a good choice in the Sarno V8 octal preamp.. I just got off the phone with Mickey Adams and he was so blown away with its tone that he bought one..Thanks for the review of the amps you listened too.. |

I'm a huge tube amp proponent. I play through a 70's era Fender Vibrosonic reverb and love it. I was hoping the LW amp would be the next best thing but in it's current state, I don't feel it's the amp for me.
The amp only hase a tone control. No separate bass, mid range and treble. I tried the amp and could find no sweet spot where there was the right amount of eq for my tastes. I'm a ZB, Push/Pull type guy and I like good midrange punch. I found the amp either to bright or too dark depending on where the tone control was. Also, the head room is not sufficient for live performances as it breaks up too soon.
Now, all that being said. If you run a preamp with it's own eq section that you're happy with, and you mic your rig and can deal with hearing that in a monitor, it may work for you. For the money though, I'd try out other tube amps that have real eq controls and onboard reverb such as the Milkman Pedal steel amp. I have not played it yet but I'm hoping for better results there as it has what the LW is missing plus 85Watts instead of 50. |

Just curious but how does the LW amp compare with tone/power of a Session 400 & 500. I've returned to the 400's/500's for my personal taste, of course that includes the 15" speakers also. What's most powerful LW amp made for psg? Currently I have 2 Session 400's and 2 Session 500's. Very pleased which each, so for me to purchase another amp, it'll have to be a real good steel amp with plenty of power/tone. Thanks. |
