There was a Steel player named Buddy Emmons that was also pretty note-worthy player on the Telecaster. He was one of the reference-standards for PSG playing. His name is still cited often by many people as an influence and/or an inspiration to learn the PSG. I even have a cranky old S10 which bears his "Emmons" name.
He toured with a lot of well known artists during the 60's and 70's. And then in the 80's he disappeared from my musical radar. The last time I know of him playing a gig here in the DC area was when he was playing with a DC band called Redneck Jazz (a great band I'll add); and that was more than 30 years ago. _________________ Regards

Do you mean the Buddy Emmons who is one of the greatest musicians who ever walked the face of the Earth, was one of two or three guys who invented the modern pedal steel, the guy who was codeveloper of Sho Bud & Emmons steel guitars? Buddy is not just another studio cat from the 60's & 70's _ he is just about the best there is.
So, to answer your question, Buddy retired a few years back after the passing of his wife.
He is sorely missed and very highly respected.

I thought it was a joke and should have been put in the humor section. As much press that has been given to Buddy's retirement, I thought everybody would know by now. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . This is akin to the time a younger fellow did not know who Roy Rogers was. |

What is weird about asking The Big Question
Sure we have acres of info about Buddy but No Why?.
We don’t know if it’s like Barry Sanders or if he has some kind of ailment that keeps him from playing or he retired on disability and is not allowed or some other conspiracy theory etc..
You say well that’s none of your business.
You can’t blame folks for wondering. |

I don't study it, but just passing through I've been aware of his problems with arthritis and other hand ailments, some of which got somewhat better. And his statement (rough quote)
"Either you can cut it, or you can't."
The guy's SEVENTY-SIX... he's older than the Rolling Stones & The Who, do we really need to see how that works? If he needs friendship, he surely knows where to find it.
I would assume the first poster asked the question because he wanted to know the answer, and he though this might be a good place to find out. Internet pile-on. Whee! |

on the other hand, it's always nice to get new information from the well-informed. i would never have known what a hot tele picker this emmons fellow was...though it doesn't surprise me. of all the pictures i've seen over the years, i've never seen one of the man with a tele. |

Me neither. I was under the impression that the only other instrument on which Buddy was paid to play was bass. _________________ Mark |

Taking into account my previous post, I obviously have never seen this in the past. A link below to Buddy's website and a page of some Telecaster stuff:

Nuthin but excellent. However, Buddy has played guitar on the Ernest Tubb
Texas Troubadour band when Bobby Garrett was on steel.
Ernest had offered Buddy his old job back but didn't want to
displace Garrett so Ernest put Emmons on 'take-off' guitar.

I assume the post is tongue in cheek, more clever than weird. Mr. Cole is a steel guitarist posting on the Steel Guitar Forum, after all. _________________ GFI Ultra S-10, Nashville 112, stuff. |

That's why I thought it was meant as humor. Eugene has been here for quite a while (I recognized his name immediately), and it's hard to imagine someone here that long not seeing one of the many, many posts on Buddy retiring. Of course, maybe he hasn't logged on or read the forum in the past few years. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . "I knew that!"
No, not really. I need to pay better attention. Thanks for pointing that out Russ. I might not have had enough coffee in me this morning when I Googled and came up with that one.
Well, I guess that puts me back to square one. I still haven't seen evidence or have knowledge of Buddy Emmons on a Tele for a paying gig.
Though Storm posted that he's seen him play a Tele. Might be like when a baseball manager brings in the guy from right field to pitch one inning late in the game just for the heckuva it because he might have been a star pitcher in college, even though as a a major league player he now is a full-time outfielder. _________________ Mark |
