Since the release of 'The Cavalcade Of Guitars' cd the response I get from jazz guitar players is amazing. The cd is sold on CdBaby.com and on Ebay and many young jazz guitarists are buying the cd because of the jazz guitar legends that are part of it. There are still thousands of Howard Roberts, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis and Bucky Pizzarelli fans. Howard, Tal and Herb are gone but their legendary legacy lives on. It is amazing the new friends that I have made from the jazz guitar world as they purchase the cd because of the legendary jazz players and for the first time they get the opportunity to hear the pedal steel players playing with these jazz greats. What bothers me most is that I was unable to release the album shortly after it was recorded because of one of the guitar players refusing to sign a release. It really bothers me that Curly and Julian are not around to enjoy the great comments from the jazz fans today about their great playing. Tal Farlow was absolutely overwhelmed with Curly's playing and asked me about recording with him as was the great jazz bassist, Slam Stewart, with Julian Tharpes playing. Howard Roberts wanted to do an 'in studio' recording with Buddy Emmons. Herb Ellis wanted to do an 'in studio' recording with Maurice Anderson. That's saying a lot for the talent of the pedal steel guitarists back in 1976. The Cavalcade Of Guitars featured a live concert with the above jazz guitar players, the above mentioned steel players along with Doug Jernigan and the great Louie Bellson on drums. I don't sell them anymore but they are available on CdBaby and Ebay. Although I have quit actively selling them, I do have some left at $15.50 each which includes shipping. The cd is a piece of steel guitar history that is long last giving the great steel guitar players credit where credit was due 35 years ago. THE CAVALCADE OF GUITARS.
Thanks,

Hey Dave. Do you have any idea how come none of those pairings with the guitarists ever came to fruition (other than the classic 'Doug and Bucky' album)? It's too bad the others never happened...
Of course, Buddy has recorded with Lenny Breau ("Minors Aloud") and recently Tommy White has recorded with the Pizzarelli clan. I also recall hearing a western swing album with Herb Remington and Herb Ellis. But it's too bad more didn't come of this, despite best intentions. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

Jim, The Doug and Bucky idea was concieved at the Cavalcade Of Guitars concert that night in Dallas. I got the o.k. from all involved and had even found some interested backers for the individual projects to be recorded at future dates. One of the guitar players, I will let you guess which one, decided after the concert was over and had been recorded that he wanted a lot more of the pie than he had originally agreed on. The stickler was that this guitar player was looking into the future and apparently decided that the concept of individual recordings pairing a pedal steel player with a jazz guitar player for an in studio recording was also a good idea and maybe a money maker for him. After the fact he decided that he not only wanted most of the royalties from the Cavalcade Of Guitar recording he also wanted part of everything that I did in the future concerning the steel guitars and the jazz standard guitar players or he would not sign a release for the concert recordings. I have that in writing from his attorneys. He absolutely reneged on the original agreement and, after the fact, demanded more royaltys from the Cavalcade recording than I was even getting from the record label. Therefore the major label could not release the Cavalcade recording which would have been distributed as a top line album released world wide and, according to the contract, be made available in all major retail stores. That guitar player killed my career and my ideas. At that time I was intent on showcasing the pedal steel guitar greats to the world. My dream almost came true but the interference from the one guitar player made it impossible. Although it took over 35 years to finally release the Cavalcade Of Guitars recording I feel very fortunate to even have been able to get all those legends together and to witness that the jazz guitar legends indeed were so impressed with the pedal steel legends that they actually wanted to record with them in a studio setting. Yes, it would have been great to have the individual pairings, pedal steel and jazz guitar, record together in the studio especially when those legends were at the top of their game. We still have what has been released and some more in the can from that historic night in Dallas. That basically is the story of why the individual recordings, except for Doug and Bucky, never came about. One more thing....During that year I had gotten a personal o.k. from Pat Martino to do an in studio recording with Buddy Emmons. Pat's management wouldn't agree to the recording. Dang that would have been a great one.
Thanks,

Well, I would personally rather know if it was Jimmy Bryant rather than somebody I admire as a human too. But I understand if you still have to tiiptoe around lawyers... Isn't Scotty DeWitt siting on a massive collection of videos and recordings from all the greats playing at his convention every year? I don't quite know how Dave Easley peeled out the CD of his playing there over two years, nobody even knows it exists and it's boiling with more passionate and creative playing than the next ten "jazz steel" CD's put together. What's Mr. DeWitt waiting for? |

YOu didn't forget the fabulous "Buddies" album with Emmons and Lenny Breau, Buckey Barrett. That was a monumental album for the Steel guitar. |
