Hello! I'm a relatively new pedal steel player and have really practiced a lot to get where I am at the moment (about a year of consistent and steady practice). I'm really loving playing the instrument! I do have a fairly decent musical background in 6 string guitar and especially as a bass player.

I'm fortunate enough to be getting some steady gigs playing with a fun rock (but certainly not really heavy) band that's trying to add some "pedal steel flair", if you will, to their overall sound.

Of course, I live for the times that the songs go from I to IV chords and back, but I want to grow beyond that to keep my playing interesting, but still never losing sight of my supportive role in the band. It's not "all about me". I'd get canned (and rightfully so) if I adopted that attitude.

What tips and tricks do you guys use to be an excellent supporting cast member of your band?

I'm new to the forum and as I said, relatively new to playing pedal steel (at least as far as really trying to take it seriously). I've been reading a lot on this forum and look forward to particpating more in this community!

Thanks, Dave! I am playing with the Jeremy Vogt Band. I don't have any footage or recordings of me playing with the band, I've only started playing with them since January. But, the songs I'm coming up with steel parts for can be previewed on the band's website: jeremyvogt.com.

The recordings were made prior to me playing with them, so I've been developing parts that complement the songs. I don't play on all of the songs either, but I sure have been working hard on getting in where I fit in! I enjoy the challenge.

All of the guys in the band are great people. That always helps!

With this pearl of wisdom you're already well ahead of the game - keep it up!
