I have decided to turn my Carter Starter into a non-pedal steel .I was wondering what I should use as a tuning to get the Don Helms style of playing,,the Hank Sr stuff. |

This is what Don used on his double neck steel.
As you've only one neck, best go for the E6 which is the one he used the most..

Mike,
Don used the E6 tuning on all of Hank's songs. The tuning has eight strings as shown above, but Don only needed the first six strings ( G# E C# B G# E) to play for Hank. He used the other tuning for something else.
I hope you have fun with it. When I started playing several years ago, I started out learning how to play in the style of Don Helms. To tell you the honest truth, It still has the best sound and it's what most people will stop in their tracks to listen to! The opening lick played on 'Your Cheatin' Heart" is probably the most famous steel guitar lick in the history of the instrument. _________________ "Shoot low boys, the're ridin' Shetlands" |
