My youngest niece just took up violin and she said her tuning is ddad. Ok, so what other are the other violin tunings? What tuning is used on something like Bob Wills? And how about classical music violin tunings such as used on Mozart and Beethoven? Did violin tunings differ from composer to composer?
Thanks in advance;

It is easy to play the steel guitar. Playing so that the audience finds it pleasing is the difficult act. |

Standard violin tuning is G D A E (bass to treble). That's the tuning that would have been used by Bob Wills and just about anybody else who plays violin or fiddle. There are alternate tunings such as the one you describe, but G D A E is the standard. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I've seen some American folk ("old time") music players using GDGD or AEAE. |

Brad is correct. Every one from Bob Wills to Jascha Heifetz (Heifetz had no peers) all tuned low to high GDAE.
Many including my self did what we called back then cross tuning. ADADflat to play the Black Mountian Rag in the key of A. Also crossed tuned to the key of D for a couple of other tunes. Sounded like twin fiddles. Tracy |

What about mandolins ?
They're supposed to be tuned the same as fiddles, but they can vary too. |
