And while you're up there... you could click on "links" and "more articles" and "old string gauge guide" and find this:
http://www.b0b.com/infoedu/gauges.htm
But I just did and now you don't have to. What you do have to do is cut and paste it into your computer and then print out a dozen copies and stick them all over the place, guitar cases, music books, your notes, hide one in your "art" DVD collection... I have a modest pile of different guitars with different scale lengths, tunings, number of strings, musical intent etc., and I swear I must track a copy down at least once a week and consult with it. It IS based around a 22" to 22.5" scale length pedal steel, and you do want to pick the highest pitch each string is gonna see. And many people are using slightly lighter strings these days.
So you may (will) have to fiddle the numbers around a bit, but they're all consistent with each other, so it's easy enough to just creep up a few gauges lighter all across the board. And there are preferences, and discussions about it, the "crossover" area between wound and unwound (0.018" to 0.026") is full of opinions, and different brands can do different things... but the chart's still worth it's weight in... Hmmm. Brass ball ends? Beanie babies... |
