Leon, for all around micing both studio & live, I have used the old standby, a Shure SM57 which does a really good job for the money. There are plenty of other mics available but also much more $$. The Sennheiser 409/906 come to mind. The 57 is a real workhorse and can withstand some abuse. There are also plenty of fake Shures out there, some being sold frequently on eBay so use caution if you go that direction.

There are a million answers to this questions. I have recorded a lot of 6 string guitar, but not a lot of steel (yet). I think the standard goto guitar mic (Shure sm57) would work fairly well on a lot of steel. If that was too harsh, a ribbon mic might be better. The 57 is easy to get, cheap, and capable of great results in the right hands. Where you put it and what you plug it into will probably have more effect on the final sound, IMHO.

Edit: Looks like Kevin has the same input. Ditto on the 609.
