+1 on the Gretsch! Just a few more bucks and you can get the model with the Fishman Nashville pick up. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Yeah...but then you need the Fishman Aura Jerry Douglas pedal, minimum $250 for it to sound good! _________________ Mark |

No - I have the JD Aura pedal, but don't yet have a guitar with the Fishman Nashville p'up.
Too many bills right now.
By the way, the JD pedal doesn't do much to help the mediocre sound of the older Fishman "donut" pickup in my Clinesmith. _________________ Mark |

Hate to keep jackin' Scott's post, but I forgot the power supply for my JD Aura the other night. I had to go direct to the amp, no efx, just the Gretsch with the Nashville pu...it sounded pretty good. I much prefer the fit and finish of my frugalhorn, but I'm VERY happy with the Gretschy. Gretsch donated one to the SWSGA raffle in Phoenix, may be worth coming to the show this weekend.
Ok TTT let's find a good resonator for Mr. Appleton's student. _________________ Clinesmith consoles D-8/6 5 pedal, D-8 3 pedal & A25 Frypan, Pettingill Teardrop, & P8 Deluxe. |

Brad recommended the Gretsch Boxcar, which can be had for $359 most places, and they're not bad.
Rick commented that he likes his Wechter/Scheerhorn, aka "frugalhorn." The frugalhorn is a much superior guitar but then it should be: the lowest price on the Wechter/Scheerhorn these days is about $750 new. The Gretsch and the Wechter/Scheerhorn aren't really competing with each other, in the same way a ballpark $350 Yamaha flattop is not competing with a model which sells for $750. It's a jump to another level.
Here's the gist of my post Scott: I was looking at the Gryphon site (Palo Alto) earlier and since you live in Half Moon Bay, and if it is possible for the student to stretch the budget to $550, they have a 2005 Wechter/Scheerhorn for sale right now. Maybe Gryphon would be willing to drop the price to move it?
No photos on the site of this guitar so no idea of the condition. Sounds like something they might have taken in a trade.
It's surely going to be a much better resonator guitar acoustically than the Gretsch Boxcar, particularly if Frank Ford and crew went through it to make sure it is set up correctly, and it will likely be longer before a student "outgrows" it and starts lusting for a higher end guitar, if indeed they're bitten by the dobro bug as a long term pursuit. _________________ Mark |

I have an old Oahu square neck acoustic in excellent condition for an approx. 70 year old guitar. Incredibly sweet woody tone, not a Dobro though.Replaced the wooden nut with Aluminum. Thought I'd never part with this one but moving in a few weeks and trying to get down to one steel, 1 acoustic and one electric plus the few sets of wood I have to build a few weissenborns. Need the money more than I need to pass it on to a nephew.
I live in Ben Lomond, work in SF, could deliver to HMB if he is willing to pay $250. _________________ Shobud Pro1,BMI U12, Santa Cruz F, PRS Standard, Fender Twin Reverb, ‘53 000-28 |

Hi Scott,
Recently I obtained a new Trinity River Dobro and hard-shell case from Texas for $212.00 plus shipping !!!!!!!!!!! ..it`s just PHENOMENAL and friends of mine just can`t believe what a bargain it is.
I had the choice of square or regular neck plus dull or shiny finish.
I went with the square neck and dull finish.
Just punch in Trinity River on the `net and it should come up for you.
All Z.B.est.

musiciansfriend has the Rogue spider bridge on sale for well under $200. I played one of these for about 4 yrs. They are completely upgradeable to a better cone and nut. They come with a maple/ebony bridge already installed.
Fit and finish on the one I had was perfect. Spruce top, mahogany body, cast spider, decent plastic button tuners. Played well and in tune.
Except for the lousy fitting screens, it was at least as good build wise as the 80's OMI I used to own and better than some other Asian imports that cost more.
Tonewise, not bad but better with the aforementioned upgrades that I did. The person that I sold mine to was very pleased with the playability.
For a student, first instrument not a big investment if they don't stay with it.
If I'm in the market for an entry level instrument again, I won't hesitate to buy another one.
Worst thing is getting one delivered without being destroyed in shipping as they are not packed very well. With MF though, they will keep shipping until you get one intact. JMO. |
