I will echo Jeff's sentiment...C13/B11 or any other tuning, and also compliment his masterful technique in accompanying Gary Aiko. It was Alan who inspired me to take up the lap steel again. And Jeff is no slouch either. You guys would make sweet music with a palm frond attached to half a coconut...
Keep it going braddahs... steel guitar needs you to keep picking...

Alan Akaka Is An Excellent Steel Guitar player On Any Tuning He Plays.

I agree with all in saying that Alan Akaka is an inspiration, just as JefF Ah Hoy and other Hawaiian Steel Guitar players are inspirations in their own right. They all play a prominent part in the promotion and perpetuation of Hawaiian Steel Guitar and keeping alive the traditional music of Hawaiian.
Alan also deserves credit for becoming a master kumu (teacher) to teach others the mastery of Hawaiian steel guitar. |

Can't add much more to what has already been said about Alan. I am blessed with the opportunity to get a lesson every two weeks with Alan...when my ship pulls into Honolulu. While he certainly can be, (and is) looked to for instruction on technique, for me personally, the best things I get from him are ideas and thoughts in interpretation and feel. We concentrate mostly on how to turn my distinctly non-Hawaiian style playing into something that may in a few decades pass for something close to Hawaiian style.
He also has an encyclopedic knowledge of Hawaiian music and musicians, and he frequently will inspire me to rush to Google to find out more about the musicians and music we talk about and play.
Oh...and he is a great guy with a great sense of humor as well. I've been lucky to find him. |
