HI ROB,
I Think Alvino's Gibson Guitar May Pre-date The
Console Grand Guitar.
The Video May be From The Late 1930s. ???
His Upper Neck Sounds A Bit Like The E-13th Tuning.??

Putting aside Alvino Rey's ability, that solo was bloody dreadful as a piece of music, and I am sure W C Handy would agree. _________________ Don't go in the water after lunch. You'll get a cramp and drown. - Mother. |

Some shades of Speedy West there. I thought it was ok , definetly some gimmickery, but I suppose he was playing to the gallery. |

Alvino pre-dates Speedy by a few years. One of his early guitar heroes was Roy Smeck, vaudeville's "wizard of the strings". I think Alvino got a lot of his tricks from Smeck... the bar slams, boo-wah tone, the novelty playing. On vaudeville shows a performer had 3 minutes to jump out on stage and grab the audience's attention. A lot of these techniques... boo-wah tone control, volume swells, bar chatter, and even chimes and hammer-ons have become a 'lost art' in today's world of steel guitar, especially pedal steel. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

When I was just a teenager I remember going to the Orpheum Theatre to see Alino Rey amd his Big Bamd "LIVE". His Talking Steel Guitar was part of his show. The Orpheum Theatre always had Live performances in additon to a Movie, Newsreelj, and shorts. I think the dmission was .50 cents. This was in the early 40's. The live acts changed about every two weeks. The first time I saw Bob Wills, Tex Ritter, amd Riders of the Purple Sage was at the Orpheum Theatre, I believe it is still featuring live Hispanic d Acts. The Theatre is located on Broadway in downtown Los Angeles ! _________________ Sacramento Western Swing Society Hall of Fame, 1992 |
