Not sure if this is where this should be posted.
I just wanted some input on Rogue instruments. My son want to take up playing mandolin so I was looking at this brand. It's cheap but they feel and sound good. By no means a Gibson but just some info on them would be appreciated.

No experience with their mandolin models, but I bought a Rogue spider bridge resonator guitar a few years back. The fit, finish and construction was as good as any other. Head and shoulders above the asian import stuff we used to see years ago.
If one understands that they are generally entry level or as a second instrument, I think they will not be disappointed and make a good first instrument at the very least.
IOW, obviously that Rogue reso wouldn't compare materials and tone wise with higher end instruments but stands up well among pricier others in it's class of imports. JMO FWIW. |

The Rogue line of instruments seems to be the Musician's Friend house brand for very inexpensive Asian-made instruments. I owned one of the Rogue A-style mandolins for a while, and for $50 it was very mandolin like. If you know what you're doing, you can make them sound more mandolin like. It's never going to sound great, but can be made playable. I played it long enough to decide I wanted something better, so I definitely got my money's worth.
The biggest problem with the Rogue line is that it's very inconsistent. Each instrument may or may not have problems. You get what you pay for.
Their Jersey Lightning lap steel is actually one of the better low cost lap steels out there - much better than their EA-3 with stand and gig bag. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Thanks, Jerry and Brad. It's going to be for my 16yr old son to learn on. If he sticks with it we will look at going with higher quality. _________________ ZumSteel SD-10 5-8, GFI Ultra SD-10 3+4, Goodrich V/P, Boss DD3, FenderFM, Vegas 400. Learning to play for my Savior, Jesus...... |

Rover by Saga is a better mando than a Rouge IMHO. You can get a Rover F-5 copy for about $ 450 thats pretty darn good. Their Kentucky line is really nice for the money also but pricier. _________________ Dave O'Brien

A fellow at our jam brought a morgan monroe, and it looked good, and didn't sound too bad. I didn't play it, but check into one. It had a classy look to it. Have no clue on price. _________________ Sho-Bud LDG, Martin D28, Ome trilogy 5 string banjo, Ibanez 4-string bass, dobro, fiddle, and a tubal cain. Life Member of AFM local 142 |

There's a big difference between the $50 Rogue and the $450 Rover, as there should be. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

My Morgan Monroe is a good dobro, now......after I updated it with $150 in parts and set it up myself. My Wechter Scheerhorn played great right out of the case. |

If you go here: http://music.mikeester.com/home/audio-samples, you can hear a Rogue dobro ($150 at the time from Musician's Friend) on "Fisherman's Blues" and "Children of Heaven". It was recorded over a mic with just a bit of effects added at the board. _________________ U.S.A.F. 1978-1982
