2 Minnesota steel greats sat in last night with their old band leader Danny Hargrove - Al Udeen & Cal Hand. Superb!

thank you Gary for posting this picture. Cal gave me my first lesson at the West Bank School of Music in 1975. Brings back old memories. Both Cal and Al are great guys and players as well. Just don't engage in discussions with either of them, unless you have enough time because they both have lifetimes of stories to share. Where was this picture taken?

Great post Y'all!
Steve, I think this was at the No St Paul VFW and the newest CD release/come back of Danny Hargrove. I think I played with Jan Stark who passed away a few days ago and believe she was playing with Hargrove at the time. This would have been early 80's.....
Cal, I'm still trying to find my Sho~Bro after trading it for a new 60D black Wink

I don't think so Kevin. Al is playing a Royal Precision Mullen. I thought he told me it was a 98 model. Great photo though. Earl

That is a good picture of Al Udeen on the left. He is my Dad and I bet he sounded great!

Kevin is correct. The photo was taken at the North St. Paul VFW May 19, 2012. It was Danny Hargrove's new CD release party and band reunion. Both Al Udeen and Cal Hand played in Hargrove's band. Al first, then Cal, then Mike Cass.

Here's a photo that I took of Al Udeen playing with "Danny Hargrove and The Hanging Tree" during downtown Minneapolis' annual summer festival (Aquatennial) in the early 1970's. For just one year the Aquatennial had a battle of the bands featuring professional club bands. Danny Hargrove and The Hanging Tree won! Thanks to Jim Johnson for coming up with the photo. I misplaced my copy.

I believe Denny Hemmingson was on 6-string during Mike's era with Danny. Hell of a band!

I believe that the first photo has me sitting in the background by the drummer. Vaguely remember watching Al back then.

I know very little about Cal Hand other than a gem of an album that I bought many years ago....."The Wylie Butler".......I think it was my first exposure to out of the box steel playing......

Great photos, guys! Talk about memory lane... The Loft! Al Udeen playing a push-pull! Gibson EB and flattop through the same Portaflex. The Wylie Butler is a great album, and the Sorry Muthas were a treasure. Cal always "delivered the mail," so to speak. Fond memories of the 1980 Aquatennial Torchlight Parade playing on the Minnesota North Stars float with Miss Minnesota North Star, tough-guy Jack Carlson, and Steve Christoff (with his Olympic Gold Medal dangling from his neck). Cal Hand taught me how to play E9 at Suneson's on East Lake, and Mike Cass taught me (or tried really hard to teach me) C6 at Clem Schmitzes original Steel Guitar Emporium on West Lake. Remember Denny Hemmingson, Al Svendall, Ernie Renn, and many others hanging out there on many a Saturday afternoon, back in the day...

I was always intrigued by the little ditty Cal Hand played called "Short Stories" on the "Leo Kottke, Ice Water" album.

Seeing a picture of Al Udeen now and then brought back a memorie when Al and Jimmie Colvard came over to my Mobile Home I had in Blaine MN and spent the afternoon trying to run my wife and I out of the place.

Hey Terry! I don't remember that story about running you & your wife out of your place, Was it due to an air leak That Jimmy excelled at?

I met Al in Nashville in the 70's, he tried to get me to play Gretsch guitars, and of course, I was a cocky young wipersnapper who wanted to stay fenderish. My mistake, sorry Al.
