I bought an S-12 Universal Fessenden last year. It came with the pickup pictured. I'm not sure if this is a Lawrence 912. Does anybody recognize it? I would like to know what pickup you Fessenden players settled on for your guitar that you can recommend. The one pictured sounds maybe a bit dark for my taste. I have a Wallace Truetone which I will certainly try out on this guitar.
Funny thing with the installed pickup.... If I raise the pickup so the distance to the strings is less than about 7 mm, the tone is distorted.

That is either a 712 or an XR 16 (they are identical looking). 912 has a single row of pole pieces.
712 is, I believe, the most commonly used pickup on a Fess. I'm not surprised about the high output. There are many accounts of overloading the amp input when a 710/712 is too close to the strings.
ToneAligner and Alumitone sound great on my SD12 Fess and are my personal choice.
The Alumitone is quite hot too and needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Got a Tonealogner in my Fessy S12U. I developed that pickup design using my Fessy as the test case. You might consider one if you think you'll run into some standing magnetic waves in a venue. |

Yes, I would like to think the pickup makes you hungry for a roast beef or perhaps a roast turkey over a bologna sandwich. |
