As of late November, one of my albums now has the dubious honor of being included the UK Guardian's list of "101 strangest records on Spotify".

Here's the article:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2012/nov/29/101-strangest-spotify-susan-alcorn

Having your name spelled correctly is quite nice, but there are a few factual errors:

- I live in Baltimore now, not Texas, though I lived there for 27 years. I was born in Ohio.

- I didn't stop playing country music because of the music (much of which I like) or the musicians (most of whom I admire).

- The album, released by the High Zero Festival, was released in 2005, but recorded in 2004.

The song titles are, unfortunately, my own (I was in a rather odd frame of mind at the time). I believe the merits of the music on this record are more due to the other musicians than myself: Joe McPhee, Le Quan Ninh, Karen Stackpole, Jason Willett, Andrea Parkins, Dan Breen, Jesse Quattro, Audrey Chen, and Todd Whitman.

Congrats! I've listened to the album quite a few times and find more things to like each time. Glad to see you're getting some recognition for it.

Susan
I don't take the Guardian (a bit too highbrow for me), but it does have a high readership, so you might get some additional sales through Spotify for curiosity sake at least.

That is probably the very first time that any UK newspaper has run a piece on pedal steel guitar, so...........congratulations. (Even though they couldn't get their facts right) Laughing

Thank you Ken for the congratulations, and I find it a little odd that a paper like The Guardian (which I actually read) doesn't do basic fact checking for their articles. Maybe times are tough, and they had to let the editors go.

Ben, I think Spotify does pay the artists (or whoever put pout the record) a small amount. What's fair is subjective, but my understanding is that they pay very little. I didn't have a whole lot to do with putting out that particular album other than playing and having a say in which songs were put on there, so I doubt I'll see any money from that.

However, if you want to listen to it for free, there are other sites that will let you. Doing a quick google search, I found Raditaz

which has "Concentration" in its entirety for free and, unfortunately, a newer release which I put out completely on my own. Oh well, I guess it's nice that someone thought highly enough of my music to publish it without permission.

Susan, I just wanted to thank you for doing what you are doing for the pedal steel by introducing it into another genre of music.
Also, for those of us who fear that the steel guitar is on it's way out, or that it is in it's own restricted world of Country music, I would like to refer everybody to this week's Newsletter from Bobbe, via Bob Hempker and the letter from Ike Anderson. It should be required reading for the serious steel guitar student. IMHO - a huge eye-opener!
Bless all the Ike's in this world!
