Just got wind of this band and steeler, Dawne Keli'iholokai, playing a local gig soon and found this clip of them doing one of my fave tunes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzimtSZ6caM

Makes you wonder how many other fine steelers are flying so low under the radar!

I love that song too ...

In 2008 I decided to play a set of Waltzes at Joliet ...

Folks tease me that I play too many JB arrangements ... so I wrote an arrangement of Kaula 'ili from a Sonny Chillingworth CD ... Finished off my set with it. The song had special meaning to me at that time (still does).

Did another waltz set this year ... And was gonna finish off with it ... But apparently I chat too much between songs .... And only got to play 4 out of the 5 that I had prepared to do.

My fault for ... What do y'all call it ... Talking Story ... Laughing

Anyway, very nice video ... Enjoyed it very much ... Mucho Mahalos Mr. Green

Glad someone liked it, Rick. One can never have too much Jerry Byrd, or versions of Kaula Ili. Is your arrangement video archived somewhere so we can view it?
Talking too much? Well, I've heard too many on steel that should have stuck to the vocal aspects! Long ago during my studies, Jerry told me, "There are a lot of people that can't play any better than you, Ron, but they think they can".

That was video taped and I want a copy ...

But 2007 was the last performance video that was made available to stage players ... . So it's somewhere ... I think Kamaka inherited the editing, etc job ...

He wears a lot of hats for HSGA ... So I didn't ask about it this year.

As for chatting ... I talk about my kids mostly .... At that 2010 show, I had just found out when I called home after arriving Wed nite at the Holiday Inn ... That Chrissy was pregnant with Maximo ... Shocked

Missed the 2011 ... She was 7 months along with Luigi ... Mr. Green

So I have a lot of material to work with ... Laughing

I too am very fond of this song. I can't help but recall Bobby Ingano's version of this one.

I'll bet they didn't have a pickup on them like this one, though. Whoa!

That was lovely, I started out on Hawaiiam music and would like sometime to go back and record one of those if I thought I wouldn't get shredded by real Hawaiian Players.

The singer is no doubt related to Led and Ned Kaapana, so great talent runs in the family.
James, jump on it, do what you want and forget the nay bobbers. We need alternate styles!

As Michael Lee mentioned, the double-coursed ukulele is known as the taropatch. I think it has a better tone, but that's a matter of taste.

This is the one I play. Notice that the sound hole(s) are in the shape of a pair of dolphins.

From Michael Lee Allen's post of the C.F. Martin catalog page:
Quote:
TAROPATCHES.
These are shaped like the ukuleles, only larger, same material and styles. Made regularly with eight strings, or with four strings to order.

So did Martin make a distinction between a 4-string taropatch and a tenor ukulele? Or were the 4-string taropatches the first Martin tenors, just with a different name?

She is their sister. She appears to be playing a Kala 8-string tenor (perhaps baritone) ukulele.

It really irks me that even the ukulele has to have a pickup in it nowadays. But who am I to talk with my big ol' horseshoe magnet?

The Martin Taropatch was the first concert sized ukulele... different than the 8-string ukulele often played in Hawaii today which is tenor-baritone sized with the third and fourth string pair tuned in octaves.

Nice version of Makee Ailana by that band on the tube as well. Dawne sounds a lot like Gabby's steel on volume 2 of the Maile Serenader's album to me.

Nice find Ron, a hidden gem!

Saw Dawane last night on a live feed broadcast from the Willows Restaurant in Honolulu. Although they list his name as Donnie Keliiholokai. With the same uke and bass player. This time they were supporting a singer named Rich K. I think they archive their broadcasts. Check out this webstite:

http://new.livestream.com/pakele

They do a live braodcast every Thursday 6:30 PM Hawai'i time. But it does look like they archive a lot of their broadcasts.
Dawane/Donnie did a super job. All the people in the live comment feed were complementing the steel guitar player all during the show.
