I am the happy owner of this book, but has one question. Scotty is using an abbreviation "R" in several of the pieces, eg. in Steel Guitar Rag, measure 11. Can anyone explain what this "R" stands for? it is not listed in the Tablature Instructions.

Thanks
John

In one of his other books an "R" means: quarter Rest.
"RR" is half Rest, "RRRR" is whole Rest.

That would make sense, but he also uses dots for rests in "20 solos"
and I don't understand measure 3 in Blue Hawaii:
5 R432
5 431

Root doesn't make sense.

Looks like a rest to me, then, especially since there is no note on the 3rd string.

I still doubt it as the final horisontal line in the same measure also indicates rest - as used in his great Mel Bay book for non-pedal.

If it were a rest, why would it be on a different line than the following note:

I'm going to agree with rest. I believe he used "R" because that particular rest is part of a triplet grouping.

Hmmmm. Could it be "rake", like maybe it's a ghost note?

Well, y'know Scotty is available by email and I'm sure would be happy to answer your question, especially if you direct him to this thread where he can see the pictures you've posted. Try him at scotty-at-scottysmusic-dot-com

I am just a beginner, but how would you play this if it were a "rake".

Good idea. I thought this was an easy question, but seems not.

In the last pic shown above, that little curve under the Eb mimics a flag of an eighth note.
So this is an 8th Rest.

It could also be interpreted as a tie like the other ties in that particular bar.

The value of the "R" can also be seen by counting the SEVEN notes in the 4/4 bar, which means that the "space" can only have a value of 1/8.

It's a pleasure Wink

I agree with rest too. The book also comes with a CD that contains the steel part for each song, which should clear up any confusion.

the R is a REST - thats the way 'diagram tablature' has been written since the 30's. Jerry Byrd's tabs are written this way also.

if you see a - afterwards, its to hold that note for those beats. ie. 2 - - would get 3 total beats.
sometimes (often actually) in steel, the notes are held OVER the bar line which confuses a lot of tab readers.

i would *think* this would be clearly explained in the forward, but maybe not.

Haven't heard from Scotty but noticed that R in Tabledit is used for Roll.
Anyway, I am just a beginner so thanks for all suggestions.

Jerome got it right. and "R" equals a rest and "-" means to add a quarter note worth of ring to a note. That's standard tab notation. The curved line between 2 notes is like the beam in standard notation and equals eight notes

Hi John,

The R in my arrangements means Rest. If you are reffering to Steel Guitar Rag in the 6 Solos Non-Pedal it is explained in the symbol page. A single R means rest for one count or a quarter rest. Its counted but not played.

The R connected with a half circle connected to the 2 indicates that it is like a eighth not tied to a note making it a full quarter not. You just don't the R.

I hope this explains it.

Regards,

Scotty
