Hoping someone (Jeff A. H., hint hint?) might know the tunings Pua Almeida used with his two Rick frypans. TIA! |

As far as I can tell from listening, Pua had a C6 or Am7 "lead" tuning (high to low):
E
C
A
G
E
low G
and a G11 (?) "strum" tuning:
E
C
A
F
D
B
...which functions sort of like a B11 with an extra interval on top. I believe David Keli'i and Lovey Lui also used this tuning.
Beats me as to which was the outside neck and which was the inside! |

Thanks a million Jeff! The duck recipe looks good too.
I might add that the first time I heard his intro to "I Am Hawaii" from those tapes I posted, tears came to my eyes. |

Just think about the ducks when they heard the end of Aloha Oe... |

Is that the last thing a duck hears before it's turned into A L'Orange? |

Ah, so it was Barney playing and Pua singing? Does anyone know if he ever accompanied himself on steel? |

Yep, the tape is all Barney Isaacs with the exception of a few numbers with Joe Custino instead. The only recordings I can think of with Pua accompanying himself are the Waikiki Records LPs... even then, you have to listen for his single note style to differentiate from the other steel player on those albums, Billy Hew Len. |

Wow, thanks Jeff. So that would be "My Son Pua", "Surf Rider" and?...any others I oughta look for? |

That's all I can think of! The rest of his LPs feature Billy Hew Len on steel. |

Haha, I was just being careful not to insult your knowledge. I know we're both aficionados of this stuff!
By others, I meant "Poolside Music", "Dancing Under the Stars (with Pua Almeida)" and "Pua Almeida Sings". |

Btw, my latest Pua discovery has been an album that I've been listening to all these years without realizing it was him... "More Authentic Island Songs by Mahi (Beamer)"
There are two steel players listed on that jacket: Danny Stewart and Barney Isaacs.
It always puzzled me that there is no hint of Barney on any of the tracks. I can say without a doubt now that the second steel player is Pua Almeida, evident in the frying pan tone and C6 low G tuning. Anyway, his backing is sparse but quite exhilarating on that album. A must-hear! |

YOU insult MY knowledge! Jeff, I am just an information hound (and now a Hawaiian steel junkie) with too much spare time on my hands...I blush to see these words coming from you. So thanks for the input! |

Very cool Mike! I never cared about autographs until I started collecting Hawaiian vinyl...now I have Eddie Kekaula and - wait for it - the box set of "The Folk Music of Hawaii" by Sons of Hawaii with all the members' autographs in one of the books. Gabby, Eddie, Feet, Moe, Joe. It kind of blows me away every time I think about it. |
