My wife and I were walking around the little town of Hawi on the Big Island the other day and wandered in to the Hawi Gallery. They specialize in Art & Ukuleles, and since she's looking for a Uke we went in and looked around.

In one of the back rooms I found this little gem on display. It's certainly one of a kind and looks well made.

They had a price on it in case you just have to have it.

Too bad there is no history on the instrument and no name of the luthier!
It leaves all of the color out of what might be an interesting story!
It would be of some interest to know how the merchant came to own it.

They have a website and an e-mail address, so they would likely answer any questions to the extent they could. Appears that they don't know who built it though.

Interesting. I didn't want to put the price on the post, but after looking at their website I notice that the prices in the shop for the three lap steels are each $100 less than shown on their website.

The $100 less rate is a kama'aina rate. It is a hundred dollars more if you are not a kama'aina. Winking
