OK, got two of these as Christmas gifts and I can't take them back or sell them as I don't want to hurt any fellings (especially the wife) but these amps are not my cup of tea.
The Fender GRETA amp that looks like an old table radio is 2 watts with a 12AX7 preamp tube and a 12AT7 power tube Never heard of a 12AT7 being a power tube but I have heard you can replace different # preamp tubes. The amp has a 6 inch speaker so not good for anything except a non clean bedroom bedroom blaster. It has a speaker out and I tried other speakers but not a favorable sound. Before I get into changing tubes, any suggestions? [/b] |

It is what it is. I don't think changing tubes on that amp will gain you much
Using a coupled dual triode tube as an output has been done before. It's fun to get that much distortion at such a low volume - but I agree with you that it's mostly a novelty product. _________________ Milkmansound.com |

I'd have to say if you got two of them you're allowed to take one back... at least.
I got myself an Excelsior for Christmas, the other amp in the Pawn Shop series... you'd be much happier with one of those, I can assure you. Unless both of them came from the wife (?) I'd take one back. C'mon, *two* of those things? Not even *one* is useful. Me, I'd take 'em both back to GC or wherever and get me the bigger one.
Play your steel through it and show her what it sounds like! That should close the deal. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Changing tubes won't help much. At 1 watt output (2 watts max) it is what it is. Made basically for bedroom straight guitar rockers, the idea of it is lots of sweet tube distortion at a low volume. |

I think I am going to follow Doug's advise and just use it for quiet practice especially when the wife is around. I changed the tubes on one to quality preamp tubes and it smoothed the tone out a bit.
Thanks

Since you have two of them I would try steel to volume pedal to a Boss RV-3 to the Two amps.
I tried one today at a store and there is not much hope for clean volume. V-ped + RV-3 has to help??? |

Pete, thanks for the info but I have amps for the pedal steel. I will use one Greta for my man cave where my wife can see it and the other in my studio where my friend can see it. It actually sounds very fuzzy with a Les Paul and I always wanted an amp with a VU meter......
Happy New Year

Stephan:
If logic ruled here I would take one back but then again for $179.00 gift it looks cool and I thanked the wife and friend up & down that I always wanted one of these and I will put them in different places.
I do have my eye on the Excelsior and may put the Greta on top of it for a real retro look.
Thanks for responding,
