I'm thinking of getting a medium-sized dog. If I get one, I can definitely foresee it trying to run underneath my pedal steel and knocking it over.

I'm sure a bunch of you have dogs in the house. Has it ever created a problem?

Apart from the fact that our William goes into another room when I start practicing I can't think of a potential problem.

He's okay here because I haven't started playing yet...

My little silver Yorkie hears me start to play in the back room and comes in to lay on the couch to sleep. She's my most loyal (and only fan) plus she's very forgiving of those frequently occuring clams!

My black lab use to bend my pedal rods with her wagging tail so I turned my guitar around so she can't get to them, other than that no problems

My dog, Angel, is half Black Lab and half Jack Russell Terrier; she has a lot of energy and loves to run around the room when I play, but she's never created any problems where my steel is concerned ... well, there was that period when she'd jump up on my pack seat and, if I pushed the volume pedal a little and turned on my C6th neck, she'd happily rake her paws across the strings which was kind of cute (except, she seemed to play better C6th than I could!).

For awhile I took care of my best friend's dogs (a Golden Retriever named Max, and a Lhasa Apso named Piti). That made for three dogs running about the house (including Angel) and they never created any problems with my steel. Smile

When my neice visited this summer with her one year old, hundred pound+ Newfoundland dog I took the precaution of placing my steel against the wall with the seat in front as a bumper. I was expecting a one animal stampede but she turned out to be very quiet and well behaved...at least indoors. Small children worry me more than dogs around valuable instruments. They have intent! As you can see by my avatar I have two Aussies and they love to listen to pedal steel. They have no interest in the guitar itself.

Dogs and all animals have personalities and there own little quirks. Puppys and some grown dogs have chewing fedishes. Edge of your pack seat, the edge of an amplifier, amp knobs and wires and cables could pay a price. A friend of mine had her dog wreck her computer by chewing wires. Some male dogs have a fedish about certain plastics and even cleaner liquids, Smell, hike his leg and whiz on it. Some dogs do not like to be left alone in a house, will damage things while alone. Nothing better than a good dog, Nothing worse than a bad dog in a home. Hate to be negative but it could happen. Good Luck

No problem with dogs...heres´s Ryan our "little" family member...no worries about knockin him over, and the equipment is safe when he is around.
He did not have access to the music room when he was a puppy though...as he treated our shoes like chewing gum. Shocked
Btw he leaves the room the second i start to play. Oh Well

My dog Buddy (a Norwegian Elkhound) wants out as soon as I start playing steel too. I guess those high frequencies are like a dog whistle in reverse haha.

My English Springer Spaniel heads for another room when I start to play through my practice amp (Fender Super Champ).
But my Jack Russell/chihuahua mix comes over, sits right in front of the speaker, and sings along for a minute or two. Sometimes we get a call-and-response thing going. He also likes to bring his ball and carefully poke in between the pedal rods and drop it between the pedals.

Had a problem years ago with cats peeing on guitar cases, stereo equipment, etc. Now I simply keep my gear set up in a room my pets don't have access to. Works rather well.

A bit off topic, however this non kill animal shelter was built to honor my dad. I have two Westies and my mom painted their portraits that hang in the hallway as you enter the building.

When I practice in the living room, our girl Josie, a little black lab mix, will go into the other room when I start playing.

My cat Bob sniffs , but so far hasn't jumped on it. The steel is pretty level and steady, so I am not really worried about him.

Plus, the room I usually practice in is haunted, no animals will go in there unless I or my wife are in there, and even so, they become very timid.

Len, that is a great sevice and honor to pay your late father. Much respect. My wife and I do what we can around our neighborhood.

Sure – you might feel dogs can get in the way at times, but they can also be very helpful!
Woobie helped by picking out & in this case eliminating potential colors for my next pedal steel (about 10 years ago) and pointed out my need for becoming more proficient without using the pedals.
And Beeper (the Grey cheek) assisted in determining the best string grip to use and of course bar control.

When I'm not around, Buddy prefers to sleep on the floor next to the PSG. Confused
As soon as I play, he wants out. Rolling Eyes Laughing

He was smart enough to avoid the rods when he'd run under the guitar. And he was a pretty dumb dog, so I think you'll be okay!
