Anyone used the Cube 80 XL line out to go direct to the PA yet? I'm concerned about the COSM Amp modeling.

I would assume it would work best with something like a Direct Box 1/4 in and XLR plug to the board for a balanced connection.

Or would it be better to just Mic the speaker?

Hi Ollin , I just looked up the 80 XL and it only has a 1/4" output, I was Wrong in thinking it had an XLR, Just out of curiosity if that output is a TRS 1/4" output jack it may already be balanced, If it is balanced you can buy a TRS male - XLR, but I would try it direct to the 1/4 " input on the board first, if you have one and see what you get, You may not have to go any further to see if you like it.

Thanks for your reply I hadn't considered the TRS to XLR adapter.

The new band I play in uses a snake back to a 22 channel board. A 1/4 TRS to XLR should work but I already have a Pro Co passive direct box so I can use that and not have to buy the adapter.

I was just looking for players that have gone from the Cube to the board to get their opinions on going line vs. mic to speaker.

I suppose it's as usual a subjective thing and I'll just need to try it and see which I like best.

I've used the 1/4" out to the board a few times. All I can hear when I'm playing is the amp, but people in the crowd said it sounded good thru the PA.

Hi all, I tried the 1/4 out and it worked fine, but I still prefer my SM-57 to mic up..gives the true sound of what's comming out of the speakers...only a minute or so extra time to set up...besides I can sometimes tap the mic to see if it's still on...you never know with some men on the desk Winking I use 2 cubes...one I mic...the other is just on it's own, gives a good sound spread.

i have lined out to the PA on numerous occasions, just using a 1/4" jack to jack, and have been happy with whats going out the front, but i do agree with micky, an sm58 does give a truer sound of whats coming through the roland speaker,

Hi Edward....SM-57 or 58 till do. Personally sound men at big gigs prefer the 57 as it's more directional and doesn't pickup sound from the side. Some vocalist like them too as it gives a tad more "presence" to the vocals. You takes your choice....Happy Christmas, and a healthy 2013

Because of the inconvenience of having to get up from my steel to set the chorus on my Roland 80XL amp then have to get up again to turn it off.
So what I do now is use the line out of my Roland Micro Cube RX into the 80 watt amp input set the volume and tones all straight up this not only gives a boost in power but I have all the controls at my finger tips on the Micro amp next to my steel.

I know I could use a chorus pedal but I find it is easier to adjust the delay reverb and the other effects settings with the controls on top of the amp next to my left leg and it works superbly.

Also you have a back up because if the 80 watt amp ever decides to give up you can just put the line out from the Micro Cube into the main PA to finish the gig.

Can you you use a cab with a 4 ohm speaker as an extension speaker, or does it have to be 8 ohms? Thanks, George

George, I tried my 80XL with my Peavey B/W which is 4 ohms and it worked perfectly, but that defeated the object of going lighter. I now use 2 Cube 80XL's on speaker stands ....brilliant spread of sound Very Happy

Thanks Mickey, Right now I'm using one or two MB 200s and 15" cabs. One with an Eminence EPS 15C Neo and the other with a Black Widow Neo. The Eminence cab is abot 20 lbs., the BW is about 24lbs. So actually the cube 80XL won't be lighter for me, but after all the rave reviews I'm very tempted to pick one up. Thanks again, George
