I am totally comfortable with metal finger picks...love them.

However, I wanted to try some acrylic nails for my fingerstyle guitar playing. Are these going to mess up wear metal finger picks when I play steel?

If you don't need very long acrylics, then they shouldn't interfere. I used to keep my natural nails a little less than 1/4 inch from the quick to the nail tip...and that worked well for Chet style playing.

Just experiment a bit and you should be able to find a good compromise. And remember the finger pick tips can be shaped to your liking, so, again, experiment.

I realized at some point that I use the pad of my finger between the finger pick and finger nail to block strings... I also don't curl my picks much, or else that wouldn't be possible. I have to keep my nails relatively short for this, but if you don't use this blocking technique I see no problem with the acrylic nails.

I used to use acrylics for playing classical guitar. Unless you only apply them to the very tips of your real nails, they will completely weaken your natural nail and it will take several months for them to return to strength after you remove the acrylics.
Plus, because acrylics don't breath, you are at risk for developing fungus under the natural nail.
You might consider Alaska picks. I really like the PROPIK "finger tones" which allow the pad of the finger to block the string.

Hey Donald, I've been doing this for years. I work construction, and am hard on my nails. Once a month I get my right hand done. I've never had a fungus problem, and it is all about sanding them down in a way to allow the metal finger picks to fit on your fingers.
