Its a personal choice. There is no "right way".
I used the Jeff Newaman tunings (ref to 440). But, I've seen others tune straight up, and various alternatives. |

Tempered, no different than my All Pulls.
The difference is in the tuning procedure.
The final result is the same. |

The type of pedal steel reall makes no difference in regard to how one chooses to tune it. |

FWIW, tuning to 440 WITH A DIGITAL TUNER ACTUALLY IS TEMPERED TUNING. It's called EQUAL TEMPERAMENT (ET)
Un-tempered tuning (natural tuning) is achieved by tuning to harmonics and results in what is called JUST INTONATION.
The Newman chart (and many others) is a variation on just intonation. Some versions move everything sharp by a few cents, so your E's are tuned to 441 or 442Hz (4 or 8 cents sharp). That way, the F's are not nearly half a fret flat as they are with strictly just intonation.
There are WAAAAAY more than just these two options. Everyone tunes to whatever sounds best to their ears. I try to stay as close to ET (straight up on tuner) as I can but fudge a bit on G#s C#s and Fs on E9.
Sometimes we get bogged down in the terminology. It doesn't matter how someone else tunes. If your guitar sounds in tune to you, keep doing whatever you did to get it there.
Jeff just wrote down the tuner offsets for a guitar that had been tuned properly. If I recall correctly it was Lloyd Green's guitar he originally got the numbers from. _________________ Larry Bell - email: larry@larrybell.org - gigs - Home Page
