I was really into him when I was in college. My music theory teacher was an old studio musician (first violinist in one of the movie studio orchestras), so when I showed up with his collaboration with Yehudi Menuhin, she was intrigued enough to let the class listen to one song.
My favorite quote from the Concert for Bangladesh:
"If you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more."

| I read in the NY times obit that he regretted later being part of the rock and roll concert scene as he objected to drug use in his audience. He found it disrespectful. |

Iconic figure. Sorry to hear he's gone.
I had no idea he was that age. First I remember of him was in the '60's. Beatles et al. That exposure sort of spawned a mini sitar movement in the era.
He's also the father of Norah Jones, I believe. |

Shankar lived with Norah, and her mother Sue Jones, till Norah was about 5 years old. Then he left and married Sukanya Rajan, whom he also had a daughter with, Anoushka Shankar born just two years after Nora.
Norah always knew who her father was, she just didn't have a relationship with him growing up.

Regardless of the relationship, the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree.
Both daughters of the great Ravi are brilliant musicians.
Norah's (with an "h") latest CD Little Broken Hearts is outstanding.

| His "Raga Mala" is one of the autobiographies that I ordered before I'd even finished the library copy, and re-read periodically. He was a gifted and strong man who made certain decisions he came to regret - and was strong enough to admit it, and to change & repair what he could. He got swallowed up by the "Ambassador of Indian Music" role that was both available and very ego-rewarding to him (he liked girls) and he had to haul back and reset his goals. At the height of it he was intentionally playing happy simple dumb music, and he realized it would ruin him. When he re-emerged in the 1980's he was playing dangerous again. |

The one thing I know is that Ravi, Anoushka, and Norah are all beautifully talented people. I'm so glad that I got to see, and hear, Ravi Shankar play.
