For those who are curious as to what Dad's acoustic steel sounds like......This is an old Dire Straits clip from 92 where the instrument is featured......I love the swampy sounds of the axe........Its a ten string instrument and I tune it to C6th. I have used this a lot on sessions mostly as something to blend in with the acoustic instruments........On tour I used a pickup for going direct and a microphone...no amp.

"Swampy" was just the thing that came to mind listening to that intro – even before reading your description. Sounds more Weissenborn than Dobro, really nice.

The Dire Staits On Every Street record is one of my all time favorites. The acoustic steel opening on the You and Your Friend track is absolutely haunting, and the interplay between Mark and Paul is fantastic. This is one of two "blues" songs on the record, the other being Fade to Black, where Paul takes a steel solo, using the pedals to create string bending blues licks. In the opening track, Calling Elvis, Paul uses the steel to put lay down a backing track that sounds like an electronic sequencer. There is also the traditional country pedal steel sound on the closing track How Long. I saw the tour when it came to Phoenix and the dynamics of the sound and material were great
I still have the program from the tour and there are a couple of pictures of Paul with the acoustic steel in it

I love that tone Paul. Very rich, especially on the low end. And what a subtle dialogue between you and Mr. Knopfler. Thanks for posting.

Your Dad accomlished his goal of developing a truly rich tone on this steel with a hollowed body.

Great workmanship....

Your playing, as always is deserving of this fine instrument.

I nearly hurt myself trying to figure out the bar slants to play what I heard on "How Long" - one riff in particular struck me to the heart - fortunately someone told me there were pedals involved....

Simply stunning, thanks for sharing, Paul

Really like the sound of this acoustic steel.
Ive been a big fan of Dire straits and Mark Knopfler since their big break with "sultans of swing" in 1978,but i must say that Paul took the band to a new higher level in 91 with his incredible steel works, the albums "on every street" and "on the night" are still my favorite Dire Straits album.
Must have been a fantastic experience goin on the world tour back in 91/92 ,over 14 months on the road all over the world.

I really like that tone--perfect counter to Knopfler's tone. Is this what is known as "The Box"?

Paul,
I remember being at Jeff Newmans june jam and you were there, but you had to leave early because you were heading out with dire straits. Jeff had some great jams with all the finest pickers being there.

Paul, bit off topic but is the Pedabro version that you play on Lyle Lovett's "Give me back my heart" tuned to C6th too? I've been trying to work it out on my U-12.

Paul,
Do you have an MP3 clip you could post with a solo
passage ( no back up ) on "The Box"? I would love to
hear it by itself. Hope that is possible??

I recall spending an hour or so with your dad in 1997
when I visited him at his home. We discussed acoustic steel at that time. I met your mom also on that occasion.

What wonderful people! Highlight of my trip. Smile

Kindest Regards

Roy
