Whenever I've had the pleasure of seeing Narvel Felts perform, he usually has had a steel with him, or in the house band. I've never seen Don with a steel, but I've always enjoyed his show.

I worked with Narvel Felts on a TV show out here in NZ about 20 years ago and he was an amazing fellow --- and awesome singer! And he was pretty grey then so he must be getting on a bit now -- WOW! 50 years in the music business!

I played a show with Don Williams once and he didn't have a steel. As a matter of fact his band was very small, like 3 pieces. The guitar player did a lot of string bending though.
When I was in about the 6th grade Narvel Felts played at my sister's Jr/Sr Prom. This is a high school that had about 15 students in each grade. Anyway, my sister got his autograph. We laughed and picked at her because he was a local unknown. Then about 10 years later he had a hit record and was frequently on national TV. Guess it serves us right for making fun of her.

If Don Williams doesn't tour with a steel, than who in the world played on "Some broken hearts never mend"? That was some of the best Steel work I've ever heard. |

I've had the great pleasure many times, appearing on shows with Narvel .
He was a regular guest on our tv show aired every Sat.for six years, on Fox 13 here in Memphis,Tn.
He also appeared regularly with us at the "Big-hill Pond supper club",
Our regular gig in McNairy county Tn., (Bufford Pusser's territory).
He's a blast to work with,,
gives the steel plenty room to do whatever you want.
I've always enjoyed working with him.
I'm sure his performance will be great, regardless of wheither he has steel or not.

I worked a few shows with Narvel in Indy back in the '70s. He always did a good show and was a real gentleman. His wife Loretta was with him at one show and seemed like a genuinely nice lady. |

Narvel's Drift Away is one of my all time favourite country numbers. The guy has real soul in his voice. |

Don W will be in Corpus next Tuesday (14th) on his Farewell Tour. I will be in an opening act. Does anyone know if he has a steel with him, and if yes, who it is?

I had the pleasure of working with Narvel Felt a couple of years ago. He is one of the most energetic and talented performers I have ever worked with and is a huge fan of the steel guitar. He was especially fond of Jimmy Crawford. [This message was edited by P Perry on 16 February 2006 at 07:05 AM.] |

I played with a band who opened for Norvel about 9 months ago in Greenwood, AR. I became a Narvel fan after seeing his show. He is a tremendous talent. My son is a partner with Ticketbound, who is in charge of the ticket sales for the show tonight. I plan on going and will report on it later. For some reason we have front row seats.

We just got home from a truly great show. Both Narvel and Don Williams were in great form and both the backup bands were fine musicians. Narvel had a three piece band, no steel, but they all played so tastefully together and made really good music. Don had a five piece band behind him but no steel. However, even without a steel both bands had it all together and we thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It felt a little strange being a spectator instead of being on stage but it was very nice. Narvel is a wonderfully great singer and has so much stage presence he keeps the audience captive. The auditorium will seat 1300 and it was sold out. Narvel had sold all the CD's at halftime and many people who wanted them couldn't get any. I talked with Narvel out it the foyer after the Don Williams part of the show and he had a line of autograph seekers. Don Williams had packed and left and Narvel still had a line waiting to talk or get autographs. We stayed with him 30 minutes and we finally left and Narvel was still talking with people. He would meet each person in the line and talk to them until they were ready to go. He was in no hurry at all. After Narvels last song, he plopped down on all fours and did 20 very quick pushups. The crowd went wild. Man, I have a world of admiration for Narvel Felts. It is amazing to me that I have played music for 50 years and it took me until last year when my band opened for him in Greenwood, Arkansas to realize what a talent and great guy he is.
It was a wonderfully entertaining evening. Some of the new guys could sure learn a lot by attending some of these pioneer's concerts. Even though they don't always have a steel player with them, both of these guys are well worth going to see if you get a chance and their musicians are top notch as well.

Jerry, your story about Narvel doin' pushups brought great memories; he did the same here in Finland when we had the priviledge of backing him up few years ago. Glad to hear he's still in shape The crowd ( mostly 20-30 year old rockabilly fans ) here went nuts when he dropped down and did that. Amazing voice and such a warm personality!! |
