This is my latest build - a 2x10 version of my 20W Milkman amplifier. Its a gorgeous sound with pedal steel because the extra speaker offers more low end, which suits steel. This amp has RCA preamp tubes (except V1 which is a Tung Sol 12AX7A with halo getter) and RCA 5881 on the output.

The guitar was made for me by Creston Lea - www.crestonguitars.com

The amp ships off to IL in a week, and I will miss it dearly.

Wow, what a great looking amp!

2 x 10" is my favourite speaker combination for guitar, tho' I've never tried it for steel.
I have a feeling I'd love this combo.

Awesome work Tim!

Wow, sweet. P-90's on a tele ain't too shabby either. One question, 20 watts with two 5881's, or is it a single ended one power tube set-up?

its push pull. I measured the circuit at about 23W peak but in order to be conservative I call it 20W. That is with a GZ34 and a very conservative bias point on the output tubes. It is cathode biased, so there is not going to be 30+W from those tubes. However, the cathode bias circuit makes the amp very fun to play - its responsive to the touch and very tuneful

Nice. I'll bet it sounds like more than 20 watts. I like the placement of the speakers. The high/ low configuration has always sounded better to me than side by side.

it does - sucker is loud!

I like the placement as well. The cabinet was made by Peter Mather - his cabinets are very high quality. The best I have seen by leaps and bounds. I use him for all of my custom work like this.

What speakers are those? They look like Jensen style but I can't read the label.

Jay they are Jupiter:

They are the nicest speakers on the market. Weber has nothing on them.

Awesome work Tim.

BTW I tried the GOLD JJ's & RUBY 12AX7's and your are right they are very sweet in the midrange and overall tone. Thanks for the tip!

Kind regards,

Jerry

....and are the 12LC's pretty much the same wattage rating as a C12N?
Are they going after that vintage tone or are they shooting for something different?

he is going for the vintage construction - and the tone is a result of how well the speaker is built. The magnets on these things are enormous, and the quality of the paper and basket are leaps and bounds beyond anything else in production currently.

same guy who makes the Astron style capacitors - same idea there too. The tone reflects the quality of the construction.

So, they're rated about 50 watts then?

yes Jay I believe the large magnet C12 is rated for 50W

I know that Tim Bluhm from the Mother Hips just put 2 into his Twin Reverb. They are outstanding speakers and I can not say enough good things about them. The quality makes weber look like a pretend joke speaker, yet they only cost a little more money. Chris' attention to detail is unmatched.

I am going to have him make me a custom 15" speaker for a new amp idea I have.
