I don't think it's that this instrument is so un-discovered: I think it's more to the point that if those who want to try the pedal steel they are frightened away from taking the first step. It is the steelers themselves who are constantly expounding that the pedal steel guitar is a nightmare to learn to play.

It is the above, along with the price of a pedal steel guitar, that shies most young people away from trying learn to play one. It may be a wise move to get a newbie to try a non-pedal S8, using a C6th tuning first, to let them find out if they would like to progress to the next step.
